Solar Fuse and Holder: Check the Pair Before You Order

작성자: Dean D.  •   읽는 시간 7분

An unmarked cylindrical ceramic fuse link and separate empty modular holder rest on an inspection bench, illustrating a purchase that must identify both parts.

A solar fuse quotation should identify both the replaceable fuse link and the holder that receives it. A line reading “PV fuse, 10×38 mm” leaves the buyer to discover which holder, end fitting and supporting documents were included. Put those identities into the quotation before comparing unit prices.

Quick Answer: Buy a solar fuse and fuse holder as a documented pair. Record both exact part numbers, the manufacturer's compatibility reference, DC ratings, fuse class and applicable conditions. Match the delivered labels to that record. Physical fit alone does not establish an approved pair or suitability for your circuit.

This checklist helps purchasing teams reconcile component documents and samples. The responsible designer must define the circuit requirements and approve protective-device selection. A high-voltage PV example below illustrates catalogue matching; it is not a recommendation for a miniature panel or a battery circuit.

Define the fuse-link and holder pair

Ask for two complete part numbers and a clear supply boundary. The fuse link and fuse holder need separate entries even when a supplier offers them as one packaged set. Keep the manufacturer's catalog symbol alongside any distributor's stock code.

Describe what one ordered set contains: the number of links, holder configuration and any separately supplied accessories. If the holder is sold empty, state that explicitly. A photograph with a fuse inside does not establish that the fuse is included in the quoted price.

For replacement orders, retain the previously approved pair as the reference. Ask whether a quoted change affects the link, holder or both. An “equivalent” fuse with an unchanged holder needs a fresh pairing check; carrying forward the old holder's approval does not document the replacement.

Two parts need one documented pairing reference Separate cards identify the fuse-link part number and holder part number. Both lead to a manufacturer pairing reference and a record of approved conditions. This is a procurement workflow, not an electrical circuit.Fuse linkExact part numberFuse holderExact part numberManufacturer pairing referenceVariant • Document • ConditionsA matching size is only one field.
Original document workflow. A pairing record identifies evidence; it does not certify a finished system.

Keep the pair together in the purchasing record, while retaining each item's price and quantity. This makes a holder-only replenishment distinguishable from a complete set and prevents spare links from disappearing inside an ambiguous assembly description.

Check dimensions and the manufacturer's holder reference

Use the manufacturer's mating reference to establish the documented pairing. Dimensions help identify a component, but the same nominal size does not resolve its end fitting, fuse family or permitted holder.

Two ceramic cartridge samples with different end fittings lie beside an empty holder, illustrating why outline and manufacturer pairing evidence must be checked together.

A current example is Eaton's Technical Data 720110, effective January 2026. Its cylindrical PV-10A10F entry appears in the table of compatible CHPV modular holders. The document also distinguishes bolt-fixing, PCB and crimp-terminal variants and excludes those versions from its holder-and-clip compatibility table. The shared 10×38 mm family description is therefore insufficient to approve a substituted end fitting.

Read the holder side too. Eaton Technical Data 720147, effective August 2025, lists CHPV1U among the non-indicating holders and identifies PV-A10F as a compatible fuse family. That connects the fuse's cylindrical catalogue entry to an identified holder variant. It does not approve this pair for your project or establish LinkSolar supply.

For your quotation, save the relevant row and page reference with the exact holder part number. If the supplier proposes another manufacturer's holder, request documentation supporting that particular combination. A catalogue row naming one family should not be expanded into permission to mix every similarly sized component.

Also request the dimensioned drawing for the quoted configuration. Reconcile the delivered end geometry with it. Where a supplier's photograph, drawing and part number describe different versions, leave the pairing unresolved until the documents agree.

Keep DC rating, fuse class and breaking-capacity evidence separate

Keep the fuse's electrical data beside the holder's data without merging their ratings. For each item, record the stated DC voltage, current rating, applicable standard and conditions. Use the document's own field names so a short-circuit rating cannot become an unlabeled “capacity” in the RFQ.

The Eaton fuse document identifies its class as gPV and gives breaking capacity and a time-current curve. Those fields belong to the documented fuse family and variant. They do not establish the rating of an arbitrary holder or tell a buyer which fuse current to select for a project.

Record Evidence to retain Question left for approval
Fuse link Exact variant, fuse class, DC rating and breaking capacity Does this device meet the approved protection requirements?
Fuse holder Exact holder variant, rating terminology and stated conditions Does the documented holder application cover this use?
Pair Manufacturer mating reference and applicable restrictions Are both ordered parts within the documented combination?
Finished equipment Responsible designer's requirements and acceptance record Has the actual design been reviewed and approved?

Keep certification documents associated with the component and variant they cover. A file number appearing in a series brochure is not a substitute for identifying the scope applicable to the purchased part. Ask the supplier to resolve conflicting statements instead of choosing the most favorable one.

If the design uses a battery connection, a different circuit location or another operating environment, return that change to the designer. The word “solar” on a listing does not extend PV documentation to every DC application. This guide provides no project current formula.

Request exact data sheets, curves and variant limits

Archive the manufacturer's documents with revision dates and the supplier's response. A download date records when you obtained a file; it does not change the document's effective date. Recheck superseded files when a supplier proposes a replacement part.

Request the fuse's applicable time-current curve and any operating-condition information needed by the designer. Keep the original chart with its model coverage and axes. A cropped curve without its legend cannot identify which quoted variant it describes.

For the holder, ask which variant supplies indication and which conditions apply to that feature. Eaton's 2025 holder sheet distinguishes indicating and non-indicating models and their temperature ranges. A suffix change can therefore affect more than the appearance of the supplied part.

Check handling limitations as a separate document item. The Littelfuse LPHV data sheet, revised 12/05/2022, explicitly says that its holders are not designed for load break. That is a model-specific limitation to record, rather than an operating procedure or permission to treat a holder as a disconnect.

Do not replace missing documentation with a demonstration of opening a live holder. Purchasing acceptance should preserve the manufacturer's restrictions and the responsible team's approved verification plan.

Build an RFQ and incoming sample checklist for the pair

Give suppliers one pair record to complete, then use it to identify incoming samples. Require exceptions to be marked against the requested configuration. A substitute should arrive as a proposed change with new pairing evidence.

A separate fuse link, empty holder and plain packaging sit beside a blank sample record for checking the two purchased component identities.
  1. Identify both items. Enter manufacturer, complete fuse and holder part numbers, end fitting and holder configuration.
  2. Attach pairing evidence. Record document title, revision, page and the row supporting the combination.
  3. Define supply scope. State links per set, empty or populated holders, accessories, spare quantities and packaging units.
  4. Attach approved requirements. Include the designer's specification and unresolved questions without filling gaps with catalogue maxima.
  5. Request comparable commercial terms. Ask for quantities, prices, sample charges and delivery information for the same documented pair.

For sample identity, photograph the two labels and packaging together and assign a sample record. Compare the exact suffixes and configuration with the accepted quotation. Retain supplier traceability information where available; a matching label helps identify a sample but does not prove authenticity or electrical performance.

Carry both component identities through procurement An accepted quotation, delivered labels and sample record each retain the fuse-link and holder identities. A changed part number returns for document review before acceptance.Quotation: link + holder identitiesLabels: match both supplied partsSample record: retain the pair
Original incoming-identification workflow. Any changed part number returns for review; document matching is not a performance test.

Separate identification checks from the electrical tests required by the approved design. Record who approved that test plan and retain the actual results. Neither a supplier's generic test report nor a pair photograph demonstrates that the delivered equipment passed those checks.

Keep spare-link orders tied to the holder reference too. If a supplier changes a fuse suffix after initial approval, hold acceptance of that substitution until the pairing documents and design review have been updated. A low price for an undocumented replacement leaves the purchasing task unfinished.

Procurement questions and next step

Can I buy any holder with the same fuse dimensions?

Dimensions are one check. Require a manufacturer-supported mating reference covering the fuse's end fitting, family and holder variant. An unverified combination remains an open item even if it appears to fit.

Does a PV fuse rating approve a battery application?

No. Ask the responsible designer to approve the device for the actual circuit and operating conditions. Keep that decision separate from matching two catalogue parts.

Prepare the two-part RFQ record and the approved project requirements before enquiring. If you want LinkSolar to help coordinate a solar-component request, send the pair record and project requirements and ask whether sourcing support is available for the specified pair. Product availability and commercial terms require confirmation.
