Solar Power for a 12V Camping Fridge: A 24-Hour Budget

A 12V camping fridge needs a 24-hour energy plan: enough usable battery energy for the night and enough daytime charging to run the fridge and restore that reserve. Whether a 200W panel is adequate depends on the fridge's measured consumption, the temperature and use conditions, and how long the panel can receive useful sunlight.

Build the budget for the fridge itself rather than borrowing a general camper load table. Keep three separate checks: the electrical connection, the overnight reserve and the daily energy balance. Passing one does not establish the other two.

Measure a full day under the conditions you expect

A compressor's running watts do not tell you how long it will run. Thermostat setting, surrounding temperature, loading and door openings can change the pattern. Record watt-hours over a representative 24-hour period with an appropriate meter, using the voltage and connection you intend to use on the trip.

Keep the test conditions with the reading: fridge model, compartment setting, approximate ambient conditions, starting food temperature and whether the cabinet was already cooled. If you will use a freezer compartment, test that configuration. The Department of Energy measurement guidance supports measuring variable consumption across time instead of relying on one instantaneous power value.

Also separate initial pull-down from normal running. A pre-cooled fridge holding cold contents answers a different question from cooling a warm load at camp. A system that balances on an ordinary day may still need stored energy to cover that first cooling period.

Use duty cycle only as a transparent scenario

Duty cycle is the fraction of the observation period during which the compressor runs. If you have no measured daily Wh yet, you can explore scenarios using explicit assumptions. Do not present an assumed duty cycle as a tested figure for your fridge.

For a hypothetical constant 40W running load, daily energy is 40W × 24 hours × assumed duty cycle. The following figures exclude other electrical consumption and losses; a whole-fridge meter reading is preferable.

Illustrative duty cycle Running time in 24h Calculated daily load Illustrative 12h night load at the same duty cycle
25% 6h 240Wh 120Wh
50% 12h 480Wh 240Wh
75% 18h 720Wh 360Wh

The night column assumes the same duty cycle throughout that period. Your fridge may cycle differently after sunset, so measure the relevant interval where possible. The table shows sensitivity to assumptions, not an ambient-temperature performance curve.

Daytime storage replenishment and fridge consumption across a night-time charging gap
Illustrative planning diagram, not to scale. Daytime charging replenishes the stored reserve; the fridge draws on usable stored energy through the night-time charging gap. This is a conceptual energy-flow illustration, not measured fridge performance.

Check usable storage through the longest gap in charging

The battery must carry the fridge across the gap between useful charging periods. That gap may start before sunset if the panel is packed away, or continue into the next morning while the site is shaded. Define the actual gap rather than equating it with a fixed number of night hours.

Use the battery manufacturer's usable-energy guidance, operating limits and permitted discharge settings. Advertised nominal Wh is not automatically the energy available at the fridge socket. Account for the supply path, reserve you want to keep and any other loads sharing that battery.

Storage question Input to obtain Consequence
How long must the fridge run without charging? Last useful solar input to next useful input Determines the unsupported operating interval
What is the fridge's energy use during that interval? Measured Wh or clearly assumed scenario Sets the night-time load to cover
How much battery energy is available at the output? Usable-energy specification or a representative test Establishes whether the interval can be covered
What reserve remains for a poor solar day? Your chosen contingency and shared loads Determines whether to add storage, alternative charging or both

Check the fridge's supply requirements and low-voltage behaviour alongside the battery output. A 12V label alone does not prove that the full operating-voltage range and connection are suitable. Use an approved regulated output and cable arrangement.

Can a 200W panel replace the energy each day?

Compare the solar energy accepted by the battery with the fridge's full-day load and other losses. A hypothetical 200W panel with four equivalent full-sun hours and an assumed overall allowance of 0.70 produces a planning estimate of 560Wh. Neither assumption is a guarantee for your campsite.

Against the illustrative loads above, that estimate leaves 320Wh before other losses at 25% duty cycle, 80Wh at 50%, and a 160Wh deficit at 75%. The differences show why “200W runs a fridge” is incomplete: the same panel assumption supports different daily balances when the load changes.

A positive balance still needs an overnight storage check. A negative balance can drain a larger battery over repeated days even if the fridge runs successfully on the first night. Reconsider panel deployment, storage reserve, charging alternatives and load conditions together.

Make the charging window fit the campsite

Place the panel where it can receive useful sun while following the fridge's placement and ventilation instructions. A portable arrangement may separate the sunny panel location from the sheltered fridge and battery. Confirm the cable route and approved extension rather than relying on a nominal panel size.

A portable fridge sits on a shaded open-sided bench with its ventilation area unobstructed and its power lead disconnected, illustrating placement and input checks without a runtime promise.

Check the receiver's solar-input voltage range, power and current specifications, plus connector polarity. For a separate battery, choose a controller and charge settings approved for that battery. For a power station, follow its integrated solar-input instructions. Do not connect an unregulated panel directly to the fridge.

FAQ: camping-fridge solar planning

Can I size the kit from the compressor label?

Use the label for connection requirements, but use measured daily energy for sizing where available. Running watts without runtime or duty-cycle evidence cannot establish daily Wh.

Does a bigger battery solve insufficient solar input?

It extends the stored reserve but does not correct a repeated daily energy deficit. Check how the reserve will be replenished across the whole trip.

Should I test with food inside?

Use a representative load and the fridge manufacturer's operating instructions. Record those conditions so the result can be compared with the intended trip.

Is solar enough during several cloudy days?

That requires a contingency calculation for your location, load and available storage. Plan an approved alternative charging route or a reduced operating requirement if the reserve is insufficient.

For sourcing review, send the fridge model, measured 24-hour and overnight Wh, battery details and likely panel deployment window. Explore the camping solar enquiry page or portable panel formats, then request a quote for the fridge charging configuration. LinkSolar assesses the specified panel, storage path or standalone accessory request before confirming a supply proposal.
