Custom Mini Solar Panel Drawing and Sample Approval Checklist

De Dean D.  •   10 minute de lecture

AI-generated concept of a custom mini solar panel sample beside front, rear and side drawing views and an empty sample inspection record.

A custom mini solar panel drawing gives purchasing and inspection a shared definition of the part. An early enquiry can start with a sketch and device requirements, with the supplier identifying open points. Before sample release, control and approve the drawing revision, reference views, physical boundaries and terminals so the sample can be checked against an agreed requirement.

A custom mini solar panel drawing for an RFQ should identify its revision, front and rear views, outer outline, interface locations and electrical test conditions. Link the quotation and sample measurements to that revision, record supplier exceptions, and agree acceptance criteria before sample release. Dimensions without reference views leave the interface open to interpretation.

Package a custom mini solar panel drawing for quotation

A quotation package should connect the panel drawing to the enclosure and electrical requirements it must satisfy. Give the supplier a named part, drawing revision and request for quotation, or RFQ, with the same attachments issued to every bidder.

Put the document identifier, revision, units and preparation date on the drawing. Include the enclosure reference and the relevant interface extract, so the supplier can see where the panel sits without interpreting an unrelated assembly file. Label provisional dimensions as provisional; purchasing should know which requirements still need engineering decisions.

Specify the purchased scope: panel only, panel with terminals, or panel with an attached lead assembly. Include the required sample quantity and intended order quantity in the cover note, with the destination and documentation request. Ask the supplier to identify omissions and alternatives against the drawing rather than silently applying defaults.

If the purchase is individual photovoltaic cells or cut pieces for portable electronics, identify that scope separately from a laminated panel or assembled charger. Specify cell outline, active area, contact layout, polarity and the agreed test conditions, and state whether stringing, soldered leads or encapsulation is included. A cell or panel drawing does not establish a finished regulated charger.

For a custom mini panel enquiry, send the panel drawing together with the approved enclosure and electrical interface information. Dean has Indiegogo product development experience from concept through production.

Keep a readable drawing export alongside any requested native design file. Agree which document controls if the files differ, and retain the issued package with the quotation. A screenshot sent later should be incorporated into a controlled revision before it changes the purchase requirement.

Set reference views before specifying the panel interface

Front view, rear view and a defined datum make panel-interface positions reproducible. A datum is the reference used to locate dimensions; name the edge, surface or other feature from which each interface is measured.

Front and rear views of a conceptual mini solar panel share an asymmetric corner feature that helps establish the same orientation in both views.

Define the front view as the view of the light-receiving face and label the rear view separately. Include an orientation feature that can be recognised in both views, such as a named corner or cable-exit side. The rear-view layout needs its own clear orientation rather than an unlabeled copy of the front.

Show terminal positions relative to the stated datum and specify the relevant face. “Pads on the left” is ambiguous when the reader turns the panel over. Label each pad or contact and put polarity beside the contact identification, keeping the drawing view consistent with the electrical connection map.

Use a side view or section where thickness, a raised termination or a cable exit affects fit. Identify whether the dimension describes the base panel, the complete assembly or a local feature. A flat overall view can conceal a projection that matters inside the enclosure.

Before issuing the RFQ, have another person locate each interface from the drawing without verbal guidance. Record any clarification on the drawing itself. The same view definitions should appear in sample photographs and measurement records, allowing the inspector to compare positions without choosing a different origin or viewing direction.

Separate outer outline from usable cell area

The outer outline defines the panel footprint; usable cell area and interface keep-out zones describe different boundaries. Draw them separately so an enclosure opening does not become an assumed active-cell specification.

A conceptual panel face distinguishes the full outer outline, an inset active-cell region and a reserved edge region for enclosure overlap.

Dimension the complete perimeter, including shaped edges or openings that affect the approved fit. A keep-out is an area reserved from a specified feature or activity; label its purpose, such as enclosure overlap or terminal clearance. Ask engineering to define those boundaries instead of inferring them from a rendering.

Three separate panel drawing boundaries A conceptual specification card distinguishes outer outline for footprint, cell area for the cell-layout boundary, and keep-out for reserved interface clearance. Thickness is documented in a side view. No numerical capability or actual product geometry is represented. The arithmetic below only illustrates how to label nested rectangular areas. It does not estimate power, define cell utilisation or recommend an enclosure clearance.

Illustrative rectangles only: area = length × width, with no product specification implied.
Named boundary Example dimensions Arithmetic area
Outer outline 100 × 60 mm 6,000 mm²
Inner opening 90 × 50 mm 4,500 mm²
Example cell-layout rectangle 80 × 40 mm 3,200 mm²

For a flexible panel project, record the agreed measurement state and mounting interface with the drawing. Thickness and local protrusions need their own requirements even when the flat outline is approved.

Define electrical terminals and test conditions

The panel drawing should identify every electrical terminal and reference the approved electrical specification and measurement conditions. Terminal geometry and electrical ratings belong to the same part revision, with separate fields for connection and performance requirements.

For solder pads, show contact identification, position, relevant dimensions and polarity on the named face. For a cable connector, identify the connector and mating interface, contact assignments, lead exit and length measurement points. State whether the supplier delivers bare pads, fitted leads or a completed connector assembly.

For loose cells, name the supplied cell revision and approved interconnection/solder-pad arrangement. Confirm cutting dimensions and cell/string electrical requirements with the supplier before sample release; no generic cut size, hand-soldering permission or available inventory follows from a panel outline.

Vmp and Imp are voltage and current at maximum power; Voc is open-circuit voltage, and Isc is short-circuit current under the stated conditions. Put the engineer-approved requirements and test-condition reference in the specification rather than deriving system compatibility from a nominal voltage label.

The public scope of IEC 60904-1:2020 covers current-voltage measurement of photovoltaic cells, subassemblies and modules in natural or simulated sunlight.

Ask for the conditions and method associated with reported values, and make the intended comparison clear. A measurement taken under different conditions should be identified before it is used to accept a sample. Specify which measured values, records and terminal checks the supplier should return.

Keep electrical acceptance distinct from approval of the whole device's charging or protection design. The responsible engineer should confirm the panel interface with that design; the procurement drawing records the approved inputs for the supplier to quote.

Tie a solar panel RFQ to one drawing revision

A solar panel quotation and its sample order should name the same controlled drawing revision. Require the supplier's response to identify accepted requirements, exceptions and proposed alternatives before the sample scope is released.

Use a requirement-by-requirement response where an interface is sensitive. An alternative cable exit, terminal arrangement or outline should be visible beside the requested requirement. Return proposed changes to engineering for approval rather than treating a general “confirmed” email as acceptance of every drawing detail.

One revision links quotation and sample review The RFQ identifies a drawing revision. The quotation confirms that revision and records exceptions. Sample measurements identify the agreed revision. Any later change requires review before release. This is a proposed document workflow, not a completed customer project. RFQ drawingQuotationSample recordNamed revisionRevision + exceptionsAgreed revision
Proposed document handoff: a revision change requires review of affected requirements.
  1. Issue: save the RFQ drawing and its attachment list.
  2. Confirm: record the supplier's quoted revision and exception response.
  3. Change: identify affected requirements and obtain an updated response.
  4. Order: put the agreed revision and accepted deviations on the sample order.

When a revised drawing arrives after quotation, ask whether it changes the quoted scope, sample construction or inspection plan. Keep the reply with the new package. Mark the earlier revision as superseded so it cannot be reused accidentally when an order is copied.

Include filenames and revision identifiers in the purchase record, not only a link to a folder whose contents can change. The record needs to show which requirement the supplier actually priced.

Approve the sample against recorded measurements

Sample approval should compare identified measurements with the agreed drawing requirements and acceptance criteria. Record the sample reference, drawing revision, measurement method and result so approval can be reviewed without relying on memory.

A mini solar panel sample, matching enclosure opening and calipers are arranged on a workbench for dimensional and mechanical-fit review.

A tolerance is the permitted variation defined by the project requirement. Measurement uncertainty describes uncertainty associated with a measurement result; it is not an extra manufacturing allowance that can be added to the drawing tolerance.

A NIST dimensional metrology publication discusses measurement uncertainty and traceability.

Agree how results near a limit will be judged, including the measurement method and relevant uncertainty information, before inspecting the sample. This checklist does not supply a numerical tolerance or establish a supplier's laboratory qualification.

Measure outline and interface locations from the named datum using the specified view. Record thickness at the agreed locations and identify whether any terminal or lead projection is included. Take clearly oriented photographs as supporting records, with the sample identifier visible in the associated inspection file.

For electrical results, attach the reported conditions and compare only against the corresponding approved requirements. Separate a dimensional fit observation from the terminal checks and electrical measurement record.

List deviations individually, including unresolved items. If a deviation is accepted, document who approved it and whether the drawing needs revision. A sample that fits one enclosure is useful evidence of that fit, while the rest of the acceptance plan still needs its recorded results.

Release the drawing with a project-specific acceptance record

The release package should identify the approved drawing, accepted deviations and sample evidence that purchasing will use for the next order. Approval needs a defined scope so later production and inspection refer to the same interface.

Keep the final drawing, supplier confirmation and sample report together under the part reference. Record who approved release and which open items were resolved. If a sample remains conditional, name the condition and the evidence needed before the affected requirement can be released.

Confirm whether the subsequent order will use the sample's approved construction and document how proposed changes will be reported. Avoid assuming that an accepted sketch automatically controls a later order: put the drawing revision and required records on the purchase document.

If a reference panel from the mini panel collection was used during enclosure development, identify it separately from the custom drawing. A reference part helps explain the interface but does not make its specifications the approved custom specification.

For a custom solar panel project review, send the controlled drawing, enclosure interface and approved electrical requirements with the intended quantities and sample checks. Ask LinkSolar for a scoped quotation that identifies the drawing revision and any exceptions needing your decision.

Ask LinkSolar to review an individual-cell or cut-cell supply requirement with the controlled drawing, connection interface and acceptance criteria. Exact dimensions, processing scope, availability and timing require confirmation.

The next decision is whether the supplier's response matches the issued package. Resolve an unexplained difference before authorising the sample, and keep the resulting revision available to the person who will inspect it.

Do I need a finished CAD drawing before asking for a quote?

An initial quotation request can use a clearly dimensioned sketch if it identifies the views, units, interfaces and unresolved requirements. Ask the supplier which information is needed to confirm scope. Before sample release, consolidate the agreed details into a controlled drawing package with a revision and acceptance plan; an estimate based on provisional inputs needs that status recorded.

How do solder pads differ from a cable connector in the drawing?

Solder pads require face identification, position, dimensions, contact labels and polarity. A cable connector also requires the approved connector and mating interface, pin assignment, cable exit and length definition. State which termination is included in the purchased panel assembly so the supplier and inspector use the same scope.

What if the drawing changes after quotation?

A drawing change after quotation requires a supplier response against the new revision. Identify the changed requirements and ask whether they affect the quoted scope, sample construction or acceptance checks. Retain the revised response, mark the old revision as superseded, and put the agreed revision on the sample order.

Does a sample approval guarantee outdoor service life?

Sample approval confirms only the requirements covered by its acceptance record. Dimensional fit and electrical measurements do not establish outdoor lifetime, environmental suitability or device safety. Define any project-specific exposure and durability requirements separately, agree the evidence needed, and document their approval rather than inferring them from the sample's appearance.
