Solar Panel Cost Per Watt: How to Calculate It

Dean D.  •   13分で読了

Eleven mini solar panels of different sizes and shapes laid out on a white background, from a small square to a long rectangle

Before comparing any two solar panels, divide the listed price by the rated watts on the same page, because that single number is the cost per watt.

The cost per watt of a solar panel is its price divided by its rated power at standard test conditions (STC). On LinkSolar's listed panels it ran from $3.00/W for the 50 W to 135 W flexible panels to $24.22/W for a single 0.45 W glass mini panel, as listed on 25 September 2026. The figure climbs as panels get smaller or more specialized.

Every price in this guide is a United States storefront list price in USD as listed on 25 September 2026, before tax and shipping, which are calculated at checkout. Each product page shows the current price. Quotes for a rooftop home system are priced per installed watt, with inverter, racking and labor included, so they are a different number.

The sections below cover how to calculate $/W and watts per square metre, why small and custom panels cost more per watt, a spec table, what sets the highest wattage and how pricing works on a custom or volume order. Current wattages and prices sit with the flexible panels listed by wattage.

What is the cost per watt of a solar panel, and how do you calculate it?

Cost per watt is the price of a solar panel divided by its rated maximum power at standard test conditions (STC irradiance of 1000 W/m², AM1.5, 25 °C). The rated figure, usually labeled Pmax, is its output under those conditions, and the LinkSolar flexible panel page lists the same three conditions. Dividing by that one rating puts a 0.45 W mini panel and a 135 W flexible panel on the same scale.

Five steps turn any panel listing into a cost per watt and a power density figure:

  1. Find the rated watts: Read the Pmax on the product page, not the output of a built-in regulator or controller.
  2. Take the pack price: Use the price for the pack size you will actually buy, because single pieces and packs carry different list prices.
  3. Divide by piece count: Divide the pack price by the number of panels in the pack to get the price of one panel.
  4. Divide by rated watts: Divide the per-panel price by the rated W, and the result is the cost per watt in $/W.
  5. Work out density: Multiply length by width in metres, divide the rated W by that area for W/m², then divide by 10.764 for W/ft².

Take the 2.3 W, 5.5 V glass mini panel, 113 × 113 mm, which LinkSolar lists at $13.90 for a single piece on its United States storefront, as listed on 25 September 2026. The division is $13.90 ÷ 2.3 W = $6.04/W. Its area is 0.113 m × 0.113 m = 0.012769 m², so 2.3 W ÷ 0.012769 m² gives about 180 W/m², or about 16.7 W/ft².

The 5-pack of the same panel is listed at $46.90, also as listed on 25 September 2026, which is $9.38 per panel. Per watt, that is $9.38 ÷ 2.3 W = $4.08/W, about a third below the single-piece figure. Steps 2 and 3 carry that difference, so a buyer comparing panels should run the math at the quantity on the purchase order.

Kilowatts per solar panel is the rated W divided by 1,000, so the 100 W flexible panel is 0.1 kW.

Why do small, flexible and custom panels cost more per watt?

Eleven mini solar panels of different sizes and shapes laid out on a white background, from a small square to a long rectangle

Small, flexible and custom solar panels cost more per watt because the fixed cost per panel is about the same whatever its wattage. Lamination, the front sheet or glass, junction box or pads, connectors, cable and handling are paid once per panel, so the fewer watts a panel carries, the more of its price each watt absorbs.

Cost per watt works like the unit price on a grocery shelf tag, where the small jar always costs more per ounce than the large one.

LinkSolar's single-piece list prices on the United States storefront, as listed on 25 September 2026, show the price per watt falling as panels grow:

  • 0.45 W glass mini panel, 60 × 45 mm: $10.90 = $24.22/W.
  • 2.3 W glass mini panel, 113 × 113 mm: $13.90 = $6.04/W.
  • 100 W ETFE flexible panel, about 1247 × 418 mm: $300.00 = $3.00/W.

The 2.3 W panel carries about five times the watts of the 0.45 W panel for $3.00 more, so its price per watt is about a quarter of the smaller panel's. The same division works on any listing in the range of mini solar panels from under 1 W.

LinkSolar's mini solar power boxes price in more than cells. As listed on 25 September 2026, the 4 W box was $42.90 ($10.73/W), the 8 W box was $52.40 ($6.55/W) and the 25 W box with a built-in MPPT controller was $85.60 ($3.42/W). Each has selectable 5, 6, 9 or 12 V DC output and a 6 × 18650 battery bay (batteries not included), and the 25 W page describes a sealed box rather than a bare panel.

Compare a power box with a bare panel plus a separate controller, battery holder and enclosure; the controller choice is covered in MPPT or PWM on a small panel.

Inside the ETFE flexible family, a larger panel no longer lowers the price per watt. The 50 W, 100 W and 135 W panels were listed at $150.00, $300.00 and $405.00 on 25 September 2026, all at $3.00/W, because at that size the fixed parts are a small share of the price.

Custom panels add tooling and set-up for a new outline, which a low-volume order typically carries alone. The LinkSolar custom solar panels page states that pricing improves in steps as quantity rises.

Encapsulation and cell technology also move the price per watt: the glass mini panels put tempered glass over back-contact cells, and the flexible panels use an ETFE front sheet. In LinkSolar's sourcing experience, back-contact cells run several percentage points more efficient than ordinary mono cells, which is why panels built on them cost more per watt and pack more watts per square metre.

A list price also leaves out how long a panel lasts, covered in why a low sticker price can cost more later.

Specs to compare before you order: LinkSolar panels by watt, size and price

Before you order, compare each LinkSolar panel's rated watts, listed size, watts per square metre, list price and price per watt on the same row, because the panel with the lowest list price is rarely the one with the lowest price per watt. The table puts seven listed panels side by side.

Every price in the table is the single-piece list price in US dollars, before tax and shipping.

Packs lower the figure further: ten 2.1 W panels at $79.90 work out to $3.80/W, and five 2.3 W panels at $46.90 work out to $4.08/W, as listed on 25 September 2026.

Check current prices for each wattage in the 50 W to 135 W flexible range.

The 2.3 W and 2.1 W mini panels list within 50 cents of each other, at $13.90 and $13.40, and land at $6.04/W and $6.38/W. The 0.45 W panel lists lower at $10.90, yet it costs $24.22/W. The 50 W, 100 W and 135 W flexible panels all list at $3.00/W, so across that family the price rises in step with the watts.

W per m² moves in a narrower band than price per watt. The listed sizes give about 167 W/m² for the 60 × 45 mm glass panel and about 192 W/m² for the 100 W flexible panel, while the smaller panel costs about eight times as much per watt.

The 25 W power box price of $3.42/W includes an MPPT controller, a battery bay and an enclosure, so its row compares a finished power unit with bare panels.

How many watts per square foot does a solar panel produce?

Frameless flexible solar panel with 32 back-contact cells in a 4 by 8 grid and paired cable leads

A solar panel's watts per square foot is its rated power divided by its area, and on LinkSolar's listed panels it ran from about 15.5 W/ft² for the 0.45 W glass mini panel to about 17.8 W/ft² for the 100 W flexible panel, worked from the listed size. In metric terms that is about 167 to 192 W/m², worked from the listed size, with prices as listed on 25 September 2026. The 2.3 W glass mini panel sits at about 16.7 W/ft² and the 2.1 W ETFE mini panel at about 17.7 W/ft², both worked from the listed size.

Cell efficiency sets the ceiling on that number. According to PVEducation, the input power for efficiency calculations is 1 kW/m², so a panel's W/m² at standard test conditions is roughly its module efficiency multiplied by 1,000.

Packing density explains why a panel scores below its own cells. According to PVEducation, packing density is the share of a module's area covered with cells rather than left blank, and it affects both output power and operating temperature. Borders, gaps and solder pads collect nothing, which is why the 60 × 45 mm panel, with the most edge for its size, lands lowest at about 167 W/m², worked from the listed size.

Density and price per watt move separately. The 2.1 W ETFE mini panel and the 100 W flexible panel sit within 1 W/m² of each other, yet one lists at $6.38/W and the other at $3.00/W, as listed on 25 September 2026.

Surface-mount assembly places back-contact cells close together on a circuit board, and back-contact cells run more efficient than ordinary mono cells, so the mini panels built this way hold more watts in each square meter. The build detail is in how surface-mount assembly packs cells tighter.

Framed glass modules built on mainstream mono cells typically land around 200 to 230 W/m², about 19 to 21 W/ft². Higher-efficiency cells push a panel toward the top of that band. When roof load limits the build more than roof area, compare watts per kilogram for weight-limited roofs as well.

What decides the highest watt solar panel you can buy?

A solar panel's rated wattage scales with its module area and cell count at a given cell efficiency, so the highest watt panel you can buy is mostly the largest panel your surface can hold. Cell efficiency sets how many watts each square metre of the panel carries. Once the cell type is fixed, more watts means more cells and more area.

According to PVEducation, the most common modules have either 60 or 72 cells with three bypass diodes, and 72-cell modules were designed for large utility installations. The 12 extra cells add a fifth more cell area to the module. With the same cells in both layouts, that added area is where the extra rated watts come from.

The LinkSolar ETFE flexible panel family shows the same pattern at a smaller scale. The 100 W panel measures about 1247 × 418 mm, or about 0.52 m², and the 135 W panel is listed in two lengths, both larger than the 100 W outline. The two are listed at $300.00 and $405.00, both $3.00/W as listed on 25 September 2026, so the extra 35 W arrives with extra area at the same price per watt.

Power density for the 100 W panel works out to about 192 W/m², worked from the listed size. With the 135 W panel listed at the same price per watt, the rating in this family follows the area.

Start from the mounting surface and the load, then check a panel's length and width against the space before comparing ratings. If one large panel will not fit, two smaller matched panels with parallel wiring reach the same total wattage at the same voltage. For a roof, hatch or enclosure with fixed dimensions, LinkSolar sources flexible laminates built to a set size, where the rated watts follow from the cell area that fits the outline.

How do you get a lower price per watt on a custom or volume order?

A lower price per watt on a solar panel order comes from buying whole packs or production quantities and fixing the specification early. LinkSolar quotes custom and volume panels from four inputs: target voltage, wattage, outline and quantity. The more of those inputs a buyer settles before asking, the closer the first price sits to the final one.

The listings show the effect at small scale. The 2.1 W, 18 V ETFE mini panel is $13.40 for one piece, or $6.38/W, as listed on 25 September 2026. The 10-pack of the same panel is $79.90, which works out to $7.99 per panel and $3.80/W, also as listed on 25 September 2026.

Production orders follow the same logic in larger moves. The LinkSolar custom panel page states that pricing improves in steps, not smoothly, so it pays to ask where the next step sits relative to your quantity. The flexible panel listing adds that customised orders may be priced better than the list, and the quote for the actual quantity is where that shows.

Voltage, wattage and quantity for a full-size or flexible design go into one request on the page for custom panels priced at your quantity, which covers panel voltages from 3 V to 48 V. For small boards, the page for custom mini panels in your outline covers custom dimensions, outlines, lead wires or connectors for production projects. An outline drawing with the target voltage and wattage gives the quote a fixed spec to price.

Price per watt also depends on who stands behind the quote. LinkSolar is a trading company and sourcing partner that runs QA on the factory side, and it confirms the cell type in writing before you order. The checks that separate the two kinds of seller are covered in telling a panel maker from a reseller.

For panels going into a product you sell, ask the supplier for its test report.

FAQ: solar panel cost per watt

Is a lower price per watt always the better buy?

A lower price per watt is the better buy only when the panel's size, weight and output fit the surface and the load. The 100 W flexible panel at $3.00/W costs $300.00 as listed on 25 September 2026, far more than a sensor needing around 2 W will use. For that sensor, the 2.3 W glass mini panel at $13.90 as listed on 25 September 2026 is the lower total spend, even at $6.04/W.

Why does the same panel cost less per watt in a pack?

Pack pricing lowers the price per watt because the pack price divided by the piece count sits below the single-piece price. As listed on 25 September 2026, the 2.3 W glass mini panel goes from $6.04/W as one piece to $4.08/W in a 5-pack at $46.90. On the same date, the 2.1 W ETFE mini panel goes from $6.38/W to $3.80/W in a 10-pack at $79.90.

How many kilowatts is one solar panel?

One solar panel's rating in kilowatts is its rated watts divided by 1,000. The 100 W flexible panel is 0.1 kW, and the 2.3 W glass mini panel is 0.0023 kW. Framed modules for home roofs have more cells and more area, so each carries a higher rating.

Does watts per square foot change with temperature?

A panel's watts per square foot is calculated from its rated power, which the flexible product page gives at standard test conditions of 25 °C. A panel running hotter than that in full sun delivers less than its rating, so its real output per square foot falls below the calculated figure. The figure still compares panels fairly, because every rating uses the same conditions.

Next step

The flexible range lists at $3.00/W as listed on 25 September 2026, but is that the right wattage for your surface?
