Solar Junction Box or Combiner Box? Specify the Right Part

Av Dean D.  •   10 min lesetid

The rear of a generic solar module shows its attached junction box, sealed cable exits and paired connector leads on a protected workshop bench.

A solar junction box belongs to a module's electrical output assembly; a combiner box collects multiple string outputs at system level. A roof cable entry gland routes cable through a surface. If a quotation calls all three a “solar box,” identify the job and location before comparing prices.

Quick Answer: Solar junction box vs combiner box is a distinction between module connections and system aggregation. A module junction box commonly sits on the panel rear and contains electrical connections, often with bypass diodes. A cable entry gland handles cable passage and sealing. Specify the actual assembly before ordering.

Which solar box are you looking for?

A module junction box, string combiner box and cable entry gland perform different jobs at different locations. Start with the component's function, then check its position in the drawing.

Three different generic components show the physical distinction between a module junction box, a larger closed string combiner enclosure and a cable entry gland.
Part Location and job Purchase boundary
Module junction box Panel rear; houses module electrical connections Specify with the module output assembly
String combiner box System level; collects multiple string outputs Specify against the system design
Cable entry gland Surface penetration; routes and seals cable Specify the cable passage and mounting surface

A module box can contain bypass diodes, but that description does not establish its internal circuit. A combiner's appearance does not establish its input count or protective equipment. A gland housing does not establish an electrical connection inside.

A system-component manufacturer's combiner category illustrates the aggregation role. Its product configurations belong to those particular assemblies, rather than to every enclosure called a combiner.

For a panel installed on an equipment housing, separate the panel's output connection from the cable's passage through that housing. Those two interfaces can appear close together while remaining different items on the parts list.

Tell the supplier whether you need a complete panel, a replacement module component, a system assembly or a penetration accessory. Keep the terms separate in the quotation so a visually similar enclosure cannot become an unnoticed substitution.

What belongs in a solar panel junction-box specification?

A solar panel junction-box specification must match the module's electrical design, rear-side geometry and output interface. A series brochure's highest rating cannot identify the variant included in a panel quotation.

  • Electrical: box rating, terminal arrangement, ribbon connection layout and the diode arrangement applicable to the module.
  • Mechanical: box dimensions, height, mounting position and cable exit direction on a dimensioned rear-side drawing.
  • Output interface: leads or connector, cable length and polarity, with an end-to-end definition of the supplied assembly.
  • Construction: housing, bonding, sealing and any potting system, identified sufficiently to match the supporting documents.

Record the exact box model and module revision beside these fields. Distinguish an enclosure's electrical rating from the panel's output parameters; the numbers answer different questions and should appear under different labels.

Where a panel connects to your device, name the mating interface as well as the panel-side termination. A cable specification without a defined endpoint can leave two quotations describing different deliverables.

A materials supplier's solar-panel application explanation describes junction-box bonding and sealing as part of module construction. Ask the panel supplier to define the relevant material system and substrates; a purchasing guide cannot select a substitute adhesive or a curing procedure.

Add the intended factory assembly process to the variant record. QC Solar’s 3Q-E page discusses manual or automated ribbon placement, while its separately documented vertical-outlet design identifies a factory cable-to-copper joining method. These descriptions belong to those products, not to every junction box. Ask the module manufacturer to confirm the ribbon interface, cable joining and bonding/potting material system for the intended production line, with the applicable instruction revision and validation record. A matching outline alone does not establish process compatibility. Keep this review with the responsible design and production teams; it is not an instruction to open or rework an existing panel.

Put unresolved fields into the supplier's response sheet. Agree their values before approving the assembly, rather than accepting a family-level specification as the purchased design.

Confirm bypass diodes against the module design

A bypass diode arrangement must correspond to the module's cell interconnection design. The words “junction box with diodes” do not identify which cell groups are connected to those components.

Ask for an internal connection diagram that relates the ribbon terminals, cell groups and output terminals. It should describe the actual panel variant under quotation, with the same revision used for the rear-side layout.

A bypass diode provides a bypass path associated with the module circuit. Do not treat that description as proof of a fuse function, reverse-current protection or every protection function required elsewhere in the finished device.

  • Circuit relationship: which cell connections reach each terminal and how the diode arrangement relates to them.
  • Component identification: the applicable diode specification and its connection in the quoted assembly.
  • Design evidence: the supplier's basis for selecting that arrangement for the specified module.

There is no diode count in this comparison that buyers should copy into every purchase order. A small device panel and a larger module can have different output arrangements; the module design determines the relevant question.

During quotation review, reconcile the electrical diagram with the physical terminal layout. If a drawing and specification sheet describe different variants, request a corrected matched set before sample approval.

Keep diode selection and electrical verification with the people responsible for the approved module design. Buyers can require a traceable answer without inventing an electrical acceptance limit or opening a sealed sample to infer its circuit.

Small panels may use a different output arrangement

A small solar panel can use solder pads instead of a rear junction-box assembly. Select its output arrangement together with the receiving device's enclosure and assembly process.

Rear views of two conceptual mini-panel assemblies compare exposed solder-pad terminations with a separately defined attached-lead termination.

LinkSolar's listed ETFE mini panel includes an SMT PCB and solder pads. That is a concrete output example, rather than evidence that every miniature panel needs a connector cable or a raised rear box.

For custom mini solar panels, provide the available rear-side space and the intended connection to the device. Identify whether the assembly calls for pads, attached leads or another defined output interface, then confirm what the quoted variant supplies.

  • Pad access: leave assembly access consistent with the agreed device layout.
  • Rear clearance: show the space available for the complete termination, including its cable exit.
  • Enclosure interface: identify where the output enters the device and how that passage will be handled.

If you are comparing listed mini solar panels, check the individual product's output description instead of assuming a familiar full-size panel connection. Panel size alone does not specify the electrical interface.

A cable entry accessory belongs to the penetration decision. The existence of a gland does not tell you how the panel itself terminates, and conductor cross-sectional area does not establish the cable's outside diameter.

Keep both interfaces visible on the device drawing so the panel connection remains accessible after the enclosure is assembled.

Compare quotations for the same module output assembly

Comparable quotations identify the same module output assembly, variant and drawing revision. Use a response sheet that exposes differences before price becomes the deciding field.

Comparison field Evidence to match Decision it supports
Module and box variant Named specification and revision Same supplied design
Rating and internal circuit Module design and connection diagram Electrical correspondence
Height, position, exit Dimensioned rear-side layout Mechanical fit
Output and polarity End-to-end assembly drawing Device connection
Bonding and sealing Material-system identification Construction correspondence
Supporting documents Applicable model and document scope Evidence correspondence

Use “supplier to confirm” for an unresolved entry. A blank or an unqualified “standard” answer should remain an open item, rather than silently becoming an accepted specification.

Ask each supplier to mark exceptions against the same sheet. A lower quotation with a different cable exit, omitted leads or another box variant needs a scope correction before you can compare its commercial terms.

Separate the price for the complete panel from any separately quoted accessory. This also prevents a cable entry gland from being counted as the module's electrical box merely because both appeared in the original request.

Keep commercial details such as quantity, sample charges and delivery terms beside the agreed configuration. The comparison sheet organizes a purchasing decision; it creates no universal minimum order, certification requirement or production-time promise.

Match one assembly across three purchasing records The quotation, approved drawing and sample record should identify the same module output assembly and revision. A difference is an item to resolve before approval.QuotationVariant and scopeApproved drawingLayout and revisionSample recordDelivered assemblySame module output assembly • Same applicable revision
Original purchasing workflow. A matching identifier organizes review; it does not demonstrate a passed test.

Approve the sample against its rear-side layout

Sample approval should confirm the delivered panel's rear-side dimensions, output polarity and assembly revision. Compare the physical sample with the same documents used to agree the quotation.

  1. Identify the sample. Record its module variant and the drawing revision submitted with it.
  2. Check physical fit. Compare the box or termination position, height and exit direction with the available device clearance.
  3. Confirm the output. Match the termination, lead arrangement and polarity marking to the approved interface.
  4. Match the evidence. Associate supplier documents with the actual construction being accepted.

Use rear-side photos alongside the dimensioned drawing. A photo helps identify the delivered arrangement; it does not replace dimensions or demonstrate electrical performance.

For custom flexible solar panels, include the output assembly in the rear-clearance discussion. An agreed panel outline alone does not show whether a termination conflicts with the mounting surface or the receiving enclosure.

Dean's Indiegogo product-development experience covers concept through production.

Have qualified personnel perform the electrical checks required by the approved design. Record the procedure and result without substituting a photograph for a test record.

Finally, state how substitutions or revision changes will be communicated after approval. The factory supplying the module should identify proposed changes so acceptance of one sample does not become open-ended acceptance of a different output assembly.

Match component documents to the complete assembly

A component document supports the component and scope it identifies; it does not automatically cover the complete panel assembly. Match each document to the supplied variant, construction and applicable revision.

The public scope of IEC 62790 concerns safety requirements, construction requirements and tests for photovoltaic-module junction boxes. Its scope description alone provides no evidence that a particular LinkSolar panel or its complete output assembly has been certified.

Ask who issued the document, what model it names and what object was assessed. A box data sheet, a component test report and an assembly test report are different records, even when their covers use similar language.

  • Object: identify the box, material system or complete assembly covered.
  • Configuration: reconcile the model and variant with the quotation.
  • Revision: check whether the document applies to the construction submitted for approval.

The public scope of IEC 60529 classifies degrees of protection provided by enclosures through the IP Code. An IP rating presented for a component does not, by itself, verify the assembled panel, its cable entry or the receiving device enclosure. Request the applicable evidence for the boundary whose performance your application requires.

Keep marketing descriptions separate from the actual document. If a claim has no matched supporting record, leave it pending in the approval sheet.

For purchasing, the useful result is a traceable relationship between the component, assembly and evidence. No standard number or enclosure label substitutes for that relationship, and this comparison does not impose a certification route on every small device panel.

Prepare the panel definition for a quotation. Share the panel outline, rear-side clearance, electrical target, preferred output and quantity through the Request a quote. LinkSolar is a sourcing partner; the request concerns a panel with a defined output assembly. Confirm any separately required component or system equipment as a separate procurement item.
