Ground solar panels by bonding exposed metal frames and racking through approved connections to the system’s equipment grounding path. Select the conductor using the applicable electrical code and circuit protection rating. Ground-mounted supports still need verified electrical bonding; posts embedded in soil do not establish an adequate equipment grounding path by themselves.

Your panels are clamped to metal rails, the rack is anchored in soil, and the wiring diagram shows a grounding connection. The unresolved detail is how every frame connects electrically to that point. Understanding how to ground solar panels starts with tracing that connection across clamps, rail joints and separate rack sections.

What does grounding solar panels mean?

Equipment grounding is the grounding of exposed metal surfaces likely to become energized, and the NREL field guide published in October 2015 states that equipment grounding is required for electrical systems governed by the National Electrical Code.

Bonding connects conductive parts together so a fault has an intentional electrical path. Equipment grounding connects those bonded parts into the system’s protective grounding arrangement. Connecting a circuit conductor to ground is a separate design decision that depends on the inverter and electrical system.

For module frames, Penn State’s grounding lesson describes continuous bare conductors attached with special connectors or short bonding jumpers between adjacent modules, and gives a sizing example of a 10 AWG equipment grounding conductor for a PV output circuit protected at 60 A.

The same Penn State lesson describes listed devices that bite into module frames and racking rails as another bonding method. Within the approved assembly, those devices can replace separate frame grounding conductors. The rack still needs its specified connection into the equipment grounding path.

A solar panel ground mount rack describes where the modules sit mechanically. Electrical grounding describes how exposed conductive parts connect electrically. The ground-mounted panel installation guide covers the mounting arrangement; the electrical drawing must identify the bonding arrangement separately.

How should I ground my solar panels?

Solar panels should have their exposed conductive frames bonded through approved hardware to the equipment grounding path, with conductor sizing based on the applicable circuit protection and code requirements. Penn State’s example uses 10 AWG for a 60 A PV output overcurrent device; that example is not a universal wire size.

Start with the module and racking installation instructions. Identify the permitted frame attachment points, the approved bonding components and the intended termination location. A clamp that holds a module securely does not establish electrical bonding unless the assembly is designed and documented for that purpose.

Choose either the documented conductor-and-connector method or the documented integrated bonding method. With separate conductors, each required metal part needs an approved connection. With integrated bonding, continuity depends on the specified module clamps, rail connections and other components in the assembly.

Trace the path across rail splices and between separate rack sections. Painted or anodized surfaces can interrupt ordinary metal contact, so electrical connections need the intended contact mechanism. Follow the specified tightening torque rather than estimating tightness by hand.

The solar panel racking system sourcing guide helps identify the structural components involved. For grounding, add an electrical function to each relevant joint: documented bonding connection, separate jumper, or no connection required by the approved design.

Can I ground a DIY ground-mounted solar array?

A DIY ground-mounted solar array needs the same documented frame bonding and equipment grounding arrangement as an array assembled by an installer. Soil contact at the posts does not replace the electrical connections specified for the modules and ground mount solar racking.

Separate the structural work from the electrical work before assembling the rack. Foundations resist mechanical loads; bonding connections carry fault current through the intended protective path. A solar panel ground mounting kit therefore needs an electrical bonding plan alongside its foundation and rail drawings.

The ground screw foundation guide addresses soil and support selection. Whether the supports are ground screws or another foundation type, verify the grounding arrangement independently. Visible contact with earth cannot confirm continuity between a module frame and the system grounding connection.

For a DIY project, have the electrical design and final verification handled by someone qualified for the installation and its jurisdiction. Modules exposed to light generate voltage even when downstream equipment is switched off. Plan electrical isolation and testing before touching conductors or removing bonding hardware.

How does the grounding rule work in a concrete example?

A PV output circuit protected by a 60 A overcurrent device uses a 10 AWG equipment grounding conductor in Penn State’s example. Applying that example requires confirming the circuit identity and approved bonding method before selecting the conductor.

Assume a ground-mounted array whose electrical drawing identifies that exact 60 A PV output protection case. Assume the chosen module and rack documentation permits a continuous bare conductor attached to the frames with approved connectors. These are example inputs, not specifications for any LinkSolar product.

  1. Confirm the protected circuit. Read the electrical drawing and identify the 60 A PV output overcurrent device. Panel wattage alone does not establish the equipment grounding conductor size.
  2. Confirm the sizing requirement. Use Penn State’s 10 AWG example as the worked reference, then have the designer check the applicable code edition and installation conditions before construction.
  3. Map the connections. Mark every frame and other exposed conductive part that requires bonding. Show how the selected continuous conductor reaches those connections and the specified grounding termination.
  4. Match the connectors. Check conductor material and size compatibility, permitted frame locations and the specified tightening torque. Lay out the route so ordinary servicing does not disturb unrelated electrical connections.
  5. Verify the completed path. Have the qualified installer inspect the connections and perform the required continuity verification. Record the method and results against the installed arrangement.

Keep the grounding drawing with the installation record. Replacing a module clamp, adding a rail section or changing a connector can change the bonding path. A later technician needs to know which components perform an electrical function.

Equipment grounding conductor in that example 10 AWG Penn State’s specified example conductor size
Crystalline silicon array described by NREL 500 kW Typical operating ground current is a few milliamps
Ground current identified by NREL 100 mA Can indicate a severe fault on a grounded conductor

Why can a small ground current still matter?

A ground current as low as 100 mA can indicate a severe fault on a grounded conductor, according to the October 2015 NREL field guide. The equipment grounding conductor size and the significance of a measured ground current answer different engineering questions.

The same NREL guide describes typical ground currents of a few microamps for properly operating residential crystalline silicon arrays and a few milliamps for a 500 kW array. Those descriptions provide operating context, not universal acceptance limits. Test interpretation depends on the system and the measurement method.

The arithmetic shows why circuit ratings can give a misleading sense of scale: 100 mA / 1,000 = 0.1 A, and 60 A / 0.1 A = 600. A current 600 times smaller than the example overcurrent rating can still carry serious fault significance. This comparison does not predict whether a protective device will operate.

Circuit protection rating and ground fault current describe different things Penn State uses a 60 ampere PV output overcurrent device in its example. NREL states that 100 milliamps, equal to 0.1 amperes, can indicate a severe fault on a grounded conductor. The numerical ratio is 600, not a protective device trip threshold.Example circuit protectionPossible severe fault current60 A100 mA = 0.1 APenn State sizing exampleNREL fault significanceNumerical ratio: 60 / 0.1 = 600Different purposes; no universal trip threshold implied
Sources: Penn State supplies the 60 A example, NREL’s October 2015 guide supplies 100 mA, and unit conversion gives the ratio of 600.

The same NREL guide identifies ground faults and arc faults as the two most common reasons for PV array fires based on field experience. Bonding inspection and fault detection therefore need separate attention. A documented bonding path establishes the intended connection; fault investigation determines whether unwanted current is present.

Which grounding hardware should I choose?

Solar panel grounding hardware should match the approved module-and-rack assembly, conductor requirements and installation environment. A lug terminates a conductor; a bonding washer establishes a specified electrical connection between compatible metal parts.

Use the comparison of grounding lugs and bonding washers to distinguish those functions. A ground mount solar racking system can use integrated frame bonding plus a conductor termination at the rack, provided the complete arrangement is approved for that use.

For a conductor-based design, check the grounding lug clamp hardware against the required conductor range, material compatibility and mounting interface. For an integrated design, compare bonding washer clips with the specified frame and rail interfaces. Verify the actual product documentation before treating either component as suitable.

LinkSolar supports China-side sourcing, specification and quality checking through partner factories. For this purchase, the useful starting document is the approved electrical and mechanical assembly drawing. That document defines the required connection more reliably than a generic photograph of solar ground mount racking.

FAQ

Do solar panels need to be grounded?

Exposed conductive solar panel parts likely to become energized require equipment grounding in electrical systems governed by the National Electrical Code, according to NREL’s October 2015 guide. The approved design determines how the frames and racking connect into that path. Circuit conductor grounding is a separate system design decision.

How should I ground my solar panels?

Solar panels should be bonded through approved frame connections or approved frame-to-rail bonding hardware into the equipment grounding path. Size the conductor for the applicable circuit protection and code requirements. Penn State’s 60 A PV output example specifies 10 AWG.

Can I install DIY ground-mounted solar panels?

A DIY ground-mounted solar installation needs an approved bonding arrangement and qualified electrical verification. Foundation installation does not establish frame-to-rack electrical continuity. Confirm the grounding drawing and component instructions before assembly.

Does every panel need a separate grounding wire?

Every panel does not necessarily need a separate grounding wire when approved bonding hardware provides the required frame-to-rail connection. The installation instructions must identify which components establish that connection. Verify the complete rack arrangement and its connection into the equipment grounding path.
