RV Solar Upgrade Kits: Compare the Retained and New BOM

De Dean D.  •   8 minute de lecture

An unbranded camper van with a roof solar module is parked at a practical service site, illustrating an upgrade project with existing equipment retained.

Quick Answer: An RV solar upgrade kit should be quoted against the equipment already installed, with every component marked retain, add, replace, by installer or unresolved. Compare the same battery, charging and monitoring assumptions before comparing prices; a panel sourcing enquiry does not establish a complete vehicle-compatible kit.

For an RV service shop or upfitter, the immediate buying task is to make roof-upgrade offers comparable around the equipment the vehicle already owns.

Manuscript last updated: October 6, 2026.

Start with a record of the equipment already in the RV

Start an RV roof retrofit with an equipment record that identifies what stays in service. The battery, charging branches and monitor are dependencies of the new proposal, even when they are absent from the supplier's shipping list.

A service compartment shows an existing battery, charging component and monitor wiring as separate items to identify before requesting an RV solar upgrade.

Record the vehicle model, year and relevant modifications alongside the house-battery model and chemistry. Attach the applicable vehicle diagram, battery charging requirements and existing solar-controller identification where available.

List the installed roof panels, solar controller, alternator charging equipment and shore-power converter or inverter charger separately. A proposed solar controller does not establish that these other charging branches can be removed or that their settings remain suitable.

Include the dashboard display, battery monitor or shunt in the record. Ask which device supplies the displayed information and how it communicates; a familiar screen does not identify the equipment behind its readings.

Use retain, add, replace, by installer and unresolved as explicit status labels. Retain means the proposal depends on an identified existing part whose continued use still needs confirmation, rather than an approval inferred from its presence.

One owner considering more roof solar after replacing the house batteries wanted to preserve factory tablet monitoring. That purchasing question illustrates a retained-equipment dependency; it provides no evidence of universal compatibility or a LinkSolar customer installation.

A first enquiry can begin with labels, photographs and the desired change. Keep missing documents visible so the supplier and installer can identify what must be resolved before a specific configuration is accepted.

Compare a starter kit, an expansion kit and a replacement package

Compare kit classes by the controller and battery assumptions they make, rather than by their names. A starter package, an expansion offer and a replacement proposal can assign different work to the buyer even when their advertised panel power is similar.

Purchasing classes for an existing house-battery installation
Proposal class Equipment boundary Confirmation needed
Starter kit Adds panels and a controller How new equipment fits the existing system
Expansion kit Proposes retaining an identified controller Approval of the complete revised array
Replacement package Changes the controller or other listed equipment Electrical and monitoring consequences

All three classes may depend on an already-owned house battery. A package shipped without a battery does not establish an operating system without storage; check the architecture assumed by the offer.

A manufacturer roof-kit manual, Rev P, March 2026 describes charging a storage battery through a controller and distinguishes base and expansion configurations in its parts checklist. That source supports reviewing the package boundary, without defining the contents of every retrofit offer.

Ask whether expansion means additional panels for a confirmed retained controller or a broader equipment change. Where the existing controller cannot be retained, the comparison must include its replacement and the related leads, protection and monitoring work.

Keep the chosen class attached to the quotation revision. Otherwise, a lower hardware total may simply reflect more equipment or integration work left to the installer.

Read the kit BOM beyond panel watts

A useful kit BOM identifies each supplied item and the party responsible for omitted items. Panel watts describe only one part of a roof-retrofit quotation; they cannot establish the complete installation boundary.

A manufacturer roof-kit product list identifies a panel, controller and positive and negative leads. The linked family manual adds a configuration-specific parts checklist covering categories such as mounting hardware, protection and optional monitoring items.

Use those categories as questions for the actual offer. Do not copy a cable-entry plate, display or harness from another configuration and treat it as included in the quoted kit.

Request a line for each panel, controller, PV lead, battery lead, branch connection, mount, roof entry and protection item required by the approved proposal. Each line should identify its part number, quantity, document revision, status and responsible supplier or installer.

The product page and family manual contain differing details across configurations. Obtain the exact quoted model and applicable revision instead of selecting a convenient wattage, expansion limit or controller description from the family materials.

For reused leads and hardware, ask the installer to confirm suitability and condition for the proposed arrangement. A retained item has a review responsibility even when its purchase cost is excluded from the quote.

Separate hardware inclusion from labour, commissioning and vehicle modifications. An entry marked by installer should name that responsibility; unresolved should remain open until a responsible party supplies the missing specification or confirmation.

Keep the BOM with the quotation so an accessory substitution is visible when the offer changes.

Make retained charging and monitoring equipment a quote requirement

Make continued use of the existing charging equipment and display an explicit requirement, subject to equipment-specific confirmation. Neither a shared nominal battery voltage nor a working dashboard proves that a proposed solar upgrade preserves those functions.

For a retained controller, obtain its exact model and the proposed complete array data. The review needs applicable panel voltage and current information, temperature behaviour and the controller's PV and battery-side requirements.

The installation requirements for a specific controller family distinguish model-dependent PV limits, cold-condition open-circuit voltage and battery protection. They also describe permitted array arrangements for that equipment; one kit family's wiring restriction cannot become a rule for every RV retrofit.

Ask the installer or relevant equipment supplier to identify the applicable instructions. This procurement record supplies no universal series or parallel arrangement, fuse value, controller setting or permission to connect the proposed parts.

For monitoring continuity, record the retained display and the communication route it uses. Ask what provides solar-controller information, what measures battery state and whether either function changes when the controller is replaced.

Keep alternator and shore-power charging branches in the review, together with battery-manufacturer requirements and any relevant battery-management constraints. A solar quotation should state which interfaces it addresses and which remain outside its scope.

If integration is unresolved, record that status before accepting the offer. A replacement controller may satisfy one electrical requirement while leaving the factory display or another charging dependency unconfirmed.

Compare both offers against the same retrofit worksheet

Compare two offers against one revisioned retrofit worksheet with the same retained equipment and installation boundary. A like-for-like comparison needs actual included parts and responsibilities, rather than a checkmark beside a headline panel rating.

Five conceptual BOM categories distinguish retained, added, replaced, installer-supplied and unresolved items in an RV solar quotation.
Scope worksheet: complete separately for each offer
BOM or work item Status to record Evidence and owner
House battery and other chargers Retain, replace or unresolved Model, requirements and reviewer
Panels and solar controller Retain, add or replace Part, quantity and applicable documents
Mounts, entry, leads and protection Supplied, by installer or unresolved Included list and installation responsibility
Monitoring and communication Retain, change or unresolved Interface evidence and integration owner
Labour and review work Included or separately arranged Named scope and responsible party

Use the same vehicle, retained battery, intended upgrade and roof constraints for both responses. Record roof clear-space dimensions and mounting assumptions rather than assuming that a panel of similar power occupies the same space.

Compare quantity, destination, included accessories and shipping terms on the same basis. Keep hardware-only prices separate from installed prices; absent commercial details remain questions, not estimated savings.

Request the proposed panel's Voc, Isc, Vmp, Imp and temperature data with its dimensions and revision. Ask who will review that information against the retained or replacement equipment.

Identify the sample or configuration review required before acceptance and retain its findings with the offer. This worksheet sets no universal test threshold or installation pass criterion.

When a quotation changes, update the affected rows and ask whether the earlier confirmations still apply. A revised panel, controller or harness may require the corresponding electrical, mounting or communication review to be repeated.

Request the panel configuration for the agreed retrofit scope

Request panel sourcing feasibility against the agreed roof-retrofit scope, with accessory and installation responsibilities stated separately. LinkSolar's role as a panel sourcing partner does not establish a stocked complete kit or vehicle-specific installation service.

Start with the vehicle and existing battery or controller identification, the desired upgrade, available roof dimensions and quantity. Labels, a roof photograph or a simple diagram can open the enquiry while missing details are clarified.

Use Request a quote for RV panel sourcing requirements to describe that scope. Ask whether a panel configuration is feasible and available, which panel data will support review and which items require separate sourcing.

The guide to panel mounting and roof constraints provides related planning context. The actual roof, proposed panel and installer-approved mounting still need their own confirmation.

Attach the status worksheet where available and identify the buyer's required monitoring functions. Ask the response to list unresolved interfaces instead of assuming that the panel supplier will provide a controller, harness or display integration.

Before accepting a product-specific offer, confirm the proposed panel identity and every included accessory, together with price, MOQ, lead time and warranty. These are quotation items; this guide establishes no supply commitment or commercial value.

Keep the installer review and panel sourcing boundary visible in the final purchase record. That gives both offers a defined scope without requiring a complete engineering package before the first enquiry.

RV solar upgrade kit FAQ

Does a kit without a battery work without storage?

A battery omitted from the shipping list may already be installed in the RV. Check the proposed system architecture and the existing battery requirements; the package description alone does not establish operation without storage.

Can an expansion kit reuse any controller?

No. The identified controller must be reviewed against the complete proposed array and its applicable instructions. Keep reuse unresolved until the responsible reviewer confirms the configuration, rather than treating expansion as a compatibility claim.

Will a replacement controller keep the factory dashboard display?

That depends on the actual display, communication route and replacement equipment. Ask which functions will remain and what evidence supports them; battery readings and solar-controller information may come from different devices.

What makes two roof-solar quotes comparable?

They should use the same retained equipment, proposed upgrade and division of responsibilities. Compare the line-item BOM, monitoring requirements, supplied accessories and installer work together with the same quantity and destination.

Keep unresolved rows attached to the chosen quotation revision. Clarifying those rows prevents a hardware comparison from silently assuming that another party has already supplied or approved the missing parts.
