36 volt wiring diagram trolling motor: Connections and Battery Sizing

Dean D.  •   8分で読了

A technician checks three protected battery enclosures near an unbranded trolling motor in a service yard.
A 36 V trolling motor uses three compatible nominal 12 V batteries in series, with two positive-to-negative jumpers and the motor connected across the remaining end terminals. Series voltage adds: 12 + 12 + 12 = 36 V. Battery amp-hour capacity stays unchanged; cable and protection ratings require the motor's installation specifications.

You have three batteries in the boat, two jumper cables, and a motor lead that must reach the correct terminals. A 36 volt wiring diagram trolling motor search should resolve those connections before you tighten anything. The diagram below shows the electrical arrangement, followed by capacity calculations and the checks that determine whether your particular batteries can use it.

What does a 36 V trolling motor wiring diagram show?

A 36 V trolling motor wiring diagram is a connection drawing showing how a battery bank supplies a nominal 36 V motor. For three compatible nominal 12 V batteries, series wiring gives Vbank = V1 + V2 + V3 = 36 V.

Series wiring connects the positive terminal of one battery to the negative terminal of the next. Parallel wiring connects matching polarities together and keeps the original voltage, so three nominal 12 V batteries connected in parallel remain a nominal 12 V bank.

The battery labels describe nominal voltage, rather than a fixed meter reading at every state of charge. Use the actual battery documentation to establish the charging voltage and operating limits; a nominal 36 V diagram does not specify either value.

How do you hook up a 36 V battery system?

A 36 V battery system connects three series-approved nominal 12 V batteries with two jumpers: battery 1 positive to battery 2 negative, then battery 2 positive to battery 3 negative. Motor negative connects to battery 1 negative, and motor positive connects through the specified protection to battery 3 positive.

Three batteries form a series bank whose outer terminals feed a protected trolling motor circuit.

Choose batteries with matching chemistry, capacity, and compatible condition. For lithium batteries, confirm that the battery management system, or BMS, explicitly permits a string of three batteries and supports the motor's current demand.

Disconnect charging sources and keep the motor isolated while assembling the bank. Identify terminals by their markings rather than cable color alone, cover exposed terminals, and follow the battery instructions for connection sequence and terminal torque.

Before connecting the motor, measure voltage and polarity across the two bank endpoints. A reading consistent with only one or two batteries means the wiring needs inspection; the expected reading for the complete string depends on chemistry and charge state.

A single purpose-built nominal 36 V battery uses its own positive and negative output terminals instead of these external series jumpers. Its voltage range, BMS limits, and charger still need to match the motor installation.

How much battery capacity does a 36 V trolling motor need?

A 36 V trolling motor needs battery capacity calculated as required Ah = average current in amperes × operating hours ÷ usable capacity fraction. Assuming 20 A average current, four hours, and an 80% usable fraction, the calculation gives 20 × 4 ÷ 0.80 = 100 Ah.

The 100 Ah result is an example, not a universal recommended battery size. Average current depends on how the motor operates, while continuous discharge capability must accommodate the motor's specified demand independently of the runtime calculation.

Three compatible nominal 12 V, 100 Ah batteries in series make a nominal 36 V, 100 Ah bank. The same motor current passes through each battery, so series wiring adds voltage without adding amp-hours.

A buyer comparing a 12v 100ah lithium trolling motor battery with a 12v 20ah trolling motor lithium iron phosphate battery should separate capacity from series compatibility. Under the same assumed 20 A load and 80% usable fraction, a 20 Ah series bank gives 20 × 0.80 ÷ 20 = 0.8 hours, provided its discharge rating supports that load.

Assumed battery arrangement Nominal bank voltage Bank capacity Nominal energy
Three 12 V, 100 Ah batteries in series 36 V 100 Ah 3,600 Wh
Three 12 V, 50 Ah batteries in series 36 V 50 Ah 1,800 Wh
Three 12 V, 20 Ah batteries in series 36 V 20 Ah 720 Wh

Every table entry uses nominal energy = nominal volts × amp-hours. Actual available energy depends on battery operating limits and losses, so these values compare assumed configurations rather than predict measured runtime.

What size fuse should a trolling motor use?

A trolling motor needs the fuse or circuit breaker specified for its motor model, with compatible DC voltage and interrupting ratings and coordination with the installed cable. Nominal 36 V alone cannot determine the protection amperage.

The protection device limits the consequences of excessive circuit current, while the cable must carry operating current under its actual installation conditions. Cable length, routing, temperature, and terminal ratings affect the selection; a plug's current rating does not establish the correct fuse size.

Use P = V × I only to calculate current when electrical input power is known. For an assumed 1,080 W electrical input at 36 V, I = 1,080 ÷ 36 = 30 A, but 30 A is not automatically the correct fuse rating because startup behavior and protection characteristics remain unspecified.

Place positive-feed protection near the battery-bank positive source as directed by the installation instructions. Keep the unprotected conductor short and protected against abrasion, and use a device rated to interrupt the available battery fault current.

How does a worked 36 V installation calculation proceed?

A worked 36 V trolling motor calculation starts with three assumed series-approved 12 V, 100 Ah batteries and establishes voltage, energy, and runtime before selecting installation hardware. Assume a compatible motor averages 25 A and the usable capacity fraction is 80%.

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm the motor accepts the battery bank's complete operating voltage range and each battery permits three-unit series operation. Check continuous discharge limits against the motor documentation.
  2. Map the terminals. Mark battery 1 negative as bank negative and battery 3 positive as bank positive. Draw the two positive-to-negative jumpers before installing cables.
  3. Calculate nominal voltage. Add 12 + 12 + 12 = 36 V. Retain 100 Ah as the series-bank capacity.
  4. Calculate nominal energy. Multiply 36 V × 100 Ah = 3,600 Wh. This is a nominal calculation, not a discharge-test result.
  5. Estimate runtime. Calculate 100 Ah × 0.80 ÷ 25 A = 3.2 hours. The estimate assumes constant average current and excludes additional losses.
  6. Complete the installation checks. Select cable, connectors, and protection using the motor instructions and cable route. Verify endpoint polarity with the motor disconnected, secure the batteries, and inspect terminal covers before energizing.

If the operating current changes during a trip, calculate consumed capacity for each interval as amperes × hours and add the results. A runtime estimate based on average current cannot establish thrust or predict performance in changing wind and water conditions.

How much does an accessory tap change battery balance?

A 12 V accessory connected across one battery in a 36 V series bank removes additional capacity from that battery alone. Assuming a 2 A accessory runs for five hours, the extra withdrawal is 2 × 5 = 10 Ah, equivalent to 10% of an assumed 100 Ah battery's capacity.

A low-voltage accessory tapped from one battery can unbalance a three-battery series bank.

The motor passes the same current through every battery in the string, but the accessory creates a separate unequal load. A bank-voltage reading can therefore conceal differences between individual battery states of charge.

Calculated capacity withdrawal with an accessory on battery one An assumed motor draws 20 amperes for two hours, withdrawing 40 amp-hours from each battery. An accessory draws two amperes for five hours from battery one, raising its total withdrawal to 50 amp-hours. Power accessories through a suitable whole-bank DC converter or a separate accessory battery instead of an undocumented midpoint tap. Keep charging arrangements compatible with the complete string; individual charging outputs require the isolation and connection arrangement specified by their supplier.

Which hardware decisions follow the wiring diagram?

A 36 V trolling motor wiring diagram determines battery connections, while cable routing, enclosure layout, and any solar charging equipment require separate specifications. Solar charging is an optional energy-replacement path after the motor circuit is correctly defined.

Secure battery restraints and terminal access before choosing the enclosure layout. The battery enclosure selection guide covers the enclosure side of a battery installation; a boat installation also requires checking suitability for its actual environment.

A panel's voltage label does not establish compatibility with the complete bank. The explanation of nominal 12 V solar panels addresses panel voltage terminology, while the controller must support the battery chemistry and complete string's charging requirements.

For an assumed 900 Wh daily withdrawal and four peak sun hours, ideal panel power is 900 ÷ 4 = 225 W before losses. If an assumed overall energy delivery factor is 0.75, calculated panel power becomes 900 ÷ (4 × 0.75) = 300 W; available mounting area and seasonal sunlight still constrain the design.

The remote solar power system page provides a system-level reference for matching generation, storage, and loads. Specify panel dimensions and controller compatibility separately from the locally sourced battery bank.

FAQ

How do you hook up a 36 volt battery system?

A nominal 36 V battery system uses three compatible nominal 12 V batteries connected in series. Connect battery 1 positive to battery 2 negative and battery 2 positive to battery 3 negative, then connect the motor across the remaining endpoints with specified protection. Lithium batteries must explicitly permit this series arrangement.

How much capacity does a 36 V trolling motor need for four hours?

A 36 V trolling motor averaging an assumed 20 A needs 100 Ah for four hours when the assumed usable capacity fraction is 80%. The calculation is 20 A × 4 hours ÷ 0.80 = 100 Ah. Confirm the batteries' discharge capability separately against the motor's specified current demand.

What size fuse should I use for my trolling motor?

A trolling motor requires the protection rating specified for its motor model and coordinated with the cable installation. Voltage alone does not provide a fuse amperage. Check DC voltage rating and interrupting capability as well as the marked current rating.

Do three 100 Ah batteries in series provide 300 Ah?

Three matching 100 Ah batteries connected in series retain a bank capacity of 100 Ah because the same current passes through every battery. With three assumed nominal 12 V batteries, bank voltage is 36 V and nominal energy is 36 × 100 = 3,600 Wh. Calculate runtime using the bank's 100 Ah capacity and an explicitly assumed usable fraction.
