Yes, genuine SunPower solar cells are still available: LinkSolar stocks two formats, 125 mm Gen 3 and 166 mm Gen 6 interdigitated back contact (IBC) cells, both from Maxeon production and sold as surplus. Each format ships full or cut, with the electrical bin stated on the product page. Stock orders process in 1–3 business days.

What we hold: 125 mm Gen 3 and 166 mm Gen 6 IBC cells

We hold two formats of genuine SunPower Maxeon cells in stock: 125 mm on the Gen 3 platform in the Me3 bin, and 166 mm on the Gen 6 platform in the Mn1 bin. Both are IBC cells — interdigitated back contact, so both electrical contacts sit on the rear face and nothing shades the front. Each format ships full, in three pre-cut sizes, or as a center strip.

Cutting a cell does not change its voltage. A one-sixth 125 mm cut still reads 0.621 V, the same as the full cell, because voltage is set by the junction rather than by area. Current is what scales: the same one-sixth cut passes 1.01 A instead of 6.05 A.

Both formats stay in stock because they solve different problems. A 125 mm cell fits small panels and high-voltage, low-current strings, where six one-sixth cuts in series make 3.73 V at 1.01 A. A 166 mm cell gives watts per cell instead, 6.60 W against 3.75 W, so the same array needs fewer cells and tab joints.

Why the official channel closed, and what "genuine surplus" means

The buying route for these cells changed because both companies behind them went through insolvency proceedings. SunPower Corporation filed for Chapter 11 in August 2024, and Maxeon Solar Technologies, the company that made the cells, entered court-supervised restructuring in Singapore in April 2026.

Genuine surplus means factory-made Maxeon IBC cells drawn from existing inventory and sold on under first-sale. The cells came off the original production platforms, Gen 3 in the 125 mm format and Gen 6 in the 166 mm format, and reached the secondary market as unbranded stock. Reselling material that has already had its first sale is ordinary trade, and it is the accurate description of what sits on our shelves.

Three distinctions decide whether a cell listing is worth reading at all:

  • Not new production. No line is running either format to fill orders, so the available quantity is whatever the inventory holds and formats disappear when a bin runs out.
  • Not cells pulled from modules. Cells recovered from laminated panels carry solder residue, ribbon scars and micro-cracks. What we stock is loose cell material that was never laminated, not salvage.
  • Not a counterfeit. Copies of back-contact cells circulate under both names, so treat the electrical signature as the proof and the wording on a listing as a claim that still needs checking.

How to verify what you receive

Four checks confirm a tray of SunPower Maxeon IBC cells is what the listing says: the rear contact pattern, the bin on the product page, a multimeter reading in direct sun, and an IV curve comparison. None of them needs lab equipment. Run them on two or three cells before the rest goes into storage. The U.S. Department of Energy's solar photovoltaic cell basics page explains why the front contact grid exists on standard cells, which is exactly what an IBC cell lacks.

  1. Look at the back, not the front. IBC stands for interdigitated back contact: both contacts sit on the rear, so the sun-facing side carries no busbars and no gridlines. Silver fingers across the front mean it is not back-contact.
  2. Match the bin to the typical parameters. Gen 3 125 mm cells ship in the Me3 bin, Gen 6 166 mm cells in the Mn1 bin, and each product page carries typical STC output for that bin: 0.621 V / 6.05 A at maximum power for a full 125 mm cell, 0.60 V / 11.0 A for a full 166 mm one. What the bin letters mean tells you more than grade wording in a title.
  3. Measure Voc and Isc outdoors. In full sun a multimeter reads Voc above the maximum-power voltage and Isc above the maximum-power current; Isc tracks irradiance, so a hazy-day reading comes in low and proves nothing. Our guide to testing and wiring SunPower cells has the method.
  4. Compare IV curves, not headline watts. Two cells can hit the same peak wattage and differ under load, which an IV curve reading shows and a wattage figure hides. Cut cells follow the same rule: voltage stays essentially constant, current scales with area.

Which format and cut for which build

Pick the voltage first, then the area. Every piece sits near 0.6 V at maximum power, full cell or cut cell, so the count of pieces in a series string sets the output voltage. Cut size then sets the current, because current scales with cell area.

A worked example: ten 125 mm pieces in series give about 6.2 V in every cut option. Full cells reach that at 6.05 A and 3.75 W each; 1/6 cuts reach it at roughly 1.0 A and 0.63 W each. Same voltage, one sixth of the current, one sixth of the footprint.

Ordering: stock packs, bulk, custom cutting, cells to module

SunPower Maxeon IBC cells can be ordered three ways: packs straight off the product pages, a quoted order for bulk volume or a custom cut, or finished mini panels built from the same cells. Which route fits depends on whether you need a listed size, your own size, or a laminated module. All three draw on the same verified surplus stock.

Stock packs

Every cut option is listed in 10-piece and 20-piece packs, so an order can go through checkout without a quote step. Both formats have their own listing: the 125 mm cell page and the 166 mm cell page, with every cut option grouped in the solar cells collection. Sample quantities go through the same checkout at the pack price shown, and in-stock orders process and ship in 1–3 business days.

Bulk and custom cuts

Send a drawing, or the target voltage and current you need, and we quote against the same stock; our walkthrough of the cut service covers what a usable drawing has to state. Cutting is laser scoring followed by mechanical separation, with a practical floor around 35 × 22 mm, and pre-tabbed cells with the interconnect ribbon already soldered on can be priced into the same quote. From cells to a finished module

The same cells are cut and laminated into custom mini panels, so a build can move from loose cells to a sealed module on one material spec. We source the laminate, front sheet and junction hardware through our partner factories, and the cell format you tested on the bench stays the cell format inside the panel. Ratings live at module level, not cell level. A laminated panel is what gets tested to IEC 61215 and IEC 61730, and its enclosure rating such as IP67 comes from the lamination and junction box, so a bare cell carries none of these marks. Buyer FAQ

Are these new SunPower cells?

No, these are genuine surplus SunPower Maxeon cells: factory-made IBC stock held in inventory and sold under first-sale, not new production. Surplus in this sense also rules out cells recovered from used modules and look-alike copies. LinkSolar is an independent seller of that stock, and the product pages state the platform and bin for each format.

Is SunPower still in business?

Not as the original company. SunPower Corporation filed for Chapter 11 in August 2024 and the brand name now trades under different ownership, while Maxeon Solar Technologies, which manufactured these IBC cells, entered court-supervised restructuring in Singapore in April 2026. What is the difference between C60, Gen 3 and Gen 6?

C60 is the classic 125 mm Gen 3 cell format, and Gen 6 is the larger 166 mm format. Both are interdigitated back contact (IBC) cells. Format sets current per cell rather than voltage, so a full 166 mm cell delivers about 6.60 W at STC against 3.75 W for a full 125 mm cell. Can you cut cells to my drawing?

Yes, down to roughly 35 × 22 mm. Send a drawing, or the target voltage and current, and we cut from the same stock using laser scoring and mechanical separation. Voltage per piece stays essentially constant after cutting while current scales with the remaining area, so the target current tells us which cut to quote.

Do you ship worldwide and who handles customs?

Yes, we ship worldwide, and in-stock orders process in 1–3 business days. Import duties and taxes are collected by the carrier at the destination where they apply, so they sit outside the order total. Shipping terms and which costs sit with which party are stated on the quote, because that varies by destination and carrier.
