Solar cell manufacturers and solar cell suppliers are two different businesses. A cell fab produces wafers and cells and sells to module factories by the container. Anyone who needs 10 to 10,000 cells buys from a stock supplier, a distributor or a cutting service instead.

This guide maps the four layers of the cell supply chain, names who manufactures cells, answers whether cell production exists in the USA, and shows where builders, labs and OEM buyers source small and mid volumes. It closes with seven questions to ask any solar cell supplier.

Manufacturer, supplier, distributor, cutting service: the four layers

Four different businesses sit between a silicon wafer and the cell in your hand, and only one is a manufacturer. A cell manufacturer runs a fab that converts wafers into tested cells; a distributor resells that output unaltered; a stock supplier holds finished cells and breaks them into packs; a cutting service resizes cells that already exist. Most buyers searching for a manufacturer need the third layer or the fourth.

Order scale and paperwork separate the four at purchase time.

Bin and lot are the two words worth holding onto. A bin is the sort class a fab assigns to cells that tested inside one electrical window, so it predicts what a cell does at STC. A lot is the production batch behind it, which is what lets a claim be traced to a date and a line.

Every layer prints the word manufacturer on its home page, so labels settle nothing. Who manufactures solar cells, and why you probably cannot buy from them

Solar cells are made at wafer-fab scale, and that scale is the whole answer to why a small buyer cannot order from the maker. A cell line runs continuously through texturing, diffusion, deposition and metallization on equipment that is paid for by volume, so cell production sits with a small number of manufacturers, most of them in China. The public list of photovoltaics companies on Wikipedia is the quickest way to see who is in that group.

The customer for that output is a module factory, not an end user. Cells leave the fab in interleaved boxes on pallets, scheduled and quoted by the container, and a fab's order desk is built around that unit. An inquiry for ten cells, or a thousand, sits below the granularity that order desk works in.

Proprietary cell platforms widen the gap, because one company runs the process. IBC cells, the back-contact design that puts both polarities on the rear face, were manufactured by Maxeon Solar Technologies, and in April 2026 that company entered court-supervised restructuring in Singapore. Commodity platforms such as PERC and TOPCon have many producers, so supply outlives any single exit; a proprietary platform has no such redundancy.

What reaches a builder, a lab or an OEM in small quantity is stock, genuine surplus and cut cells. That describes the channel, not the cell: a surplus IBC cell off the original platform has the same junction, the same metallization and the same rated output it had when it was packed. Grading tells you which electrical bin a cell fell into; the word surplus tells you only how it reached the shelf.

Are there solar cell manufacturers in the USA?

The United States has a broad module assembly base and a much shorter list of sites doing cell production, and that shorter list moves with tariffs, tax credits and capital cycles. Module assembly laminates finished cells into panels; cell production turns wafers into working cells, which is the capital-heavy step that far fewer companies attempt. The US Department of Energy (DOE) keeps a Solar Manufacturing Map that sorts sites by supply chain stage instead of by brand, and that map is the place to check the current position rather than any article, including this one.

A "made in USA" panel label usually describes where lamination happened, not where the cells came from. Marketing labels follow the last major step a company controls, so a panel can be assembled domestically and still carry cells from a fab on another continent. Panel origin and cell origin are two separate facts, and only one of them tends to be printed on the box.

If a project needs domestic cell production, brand nationality proves nothing on its own. Ask for the fab location and the lot number in writing before the order goes out, then ask for both again on the packing list — a supplier who cannot name the fab behind a lot is selling a label, not a traceable cell.

For buyers working in packs rather than pallets, the origin question usually ranks below bin and lot documentation. The electrical spread inside your batch shapes what you can build with it; the flag on the carton does not.

Where builders, labs and OEMs actually buy 10 to 10,000 cells

Four channels serve the 10 to 10,000 cell range: stock suppliers holding finished cells, cutting services that resize them, consumer marketplaces, and university or lab surplus. Only the first two are set up to repeat an order. The other two are one-off luck: the gap shows up the day a lot reads low and nobody can say which fab or bin it came from.

Seven questions to ask any solar cell supplier

Seven questions separate a supplier that holds stock and documents it from a trader reselling someone else's pallet sight unseen. Ask them before the first order: whoever answers all seven in writing has handled the cells, and whoever answers three is quoting from a photo.

  1. Which fab and cell platform is this? IBC, PERC and TOPCon behave differently under load and take solder differently, so the answer sets your build method before it sets your output.
  2. What bin is it, and who assigned the grade? Bin codes come out of the fab's own sorting; A-grade in a listing title is written by whoever typed the listing. What the bin letters encode marks the line between a measured sort and a sales label.
  3. What lot documentation ships with the order? A lot reference ties your tray to one production run, the only thread a later claim can follow back.
  4. What are the typical electrical values at STC? Voltage and current at maximum power under STC are what you check on arrival with a multimeter in full sun, and reading the IV curve behind those figures shows how two cells with identical peak wattage part company under load.
  5. Can you cut to my drawing, and what is the smallest piece? Cutting is laser scoring followed by mechanical separation, and every supplier has a practical floor; ours sits around 35 × 22 mm.
  6. What pack sizes ship from stock, and what is the lead time? Stock that exists ships in days; stock that has to be bought first turns into weeks of silence. In-stock orders here process in 1–3 business days.
  7. What happens if a lot reads low? Get the remedy in writing before you order, and how bulk orders handle sampling and shortfalls sets out what a workable arrangement looks like.

One point that trips up first-time buyers: certifications belong to modules, not cells. IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 are tested on the laminated panel, an IP67 rating describes the enclosure and junction box, and UL 2703 covers mounting hardware, so a supplier who prints those marks on a bare-cell listing is copying them from somewhere else. Can I buy solar cells directly from a manufacturer?

Usually not below module-factory volumes. Cell fabs sell to panel makers by the container, against contracts written around a module line's annual output, so a request for packs or a few thousand cells does not fit their order book. Buyers at that scale go to stock suppliers, distributors and cutting services.

What is the difference between a solar cell supplier and a manufacturer?

A manufacturer runs the fab and turns wafers into finished cells. A supplier holds those cells in stock, documents bin and lot, sells them in packs, and often cuts them to size. Most searches for a solar cell manufacturer are really searches for a supplier, because the buyer wants cells in hand.

Are solar cells made in the USA?

Cell production in the US is a short and changing list, though module assembly is widespread. Most US-branded panels laminate imported cells, so a domestic brand name says nothing about where the cell itself was made. What quantity can a small buyer order?

From stock, packs from 10 pieces upward, through checkout. Bulk quantities and custom-cut sizes go through a quote instead, because the cut and the pack format change what comes out of inventory.
