Solar Cell Tabbing Wire: Ribbon or Dog-Bone Connectors?

Автор: Dean D.  •   Чтение на 6 мин.

Repeated preformed dog-bone connectors arranged on a carrier strip

Solar cell tabbing wire is a component choice, not a universal part number. A straight ribbon, a module bus connection and a shaped rear-contact connector can appear in the same search results. Choose the connection's role first, then match the part to the actual cell contacts and assembly process.

Quick Answer: Choose solar cell tabbing wire by connection role, cell-pad geometry and approved assembly process. Straight ribbon and preformed dog-bone connectors describe different forms; bus wire describes a different job. For compatible listed back-contact layouts, LinkSolar offers a 50-piece carrier-format pack and boxed 50- or 100-piece options. Confirm fit before buying.

Start with the connection, not the product name

Separate a cell interconnect from a module bus connection. In its 2018 PV ribbon product announcement, Ulbrich distinguishes interconnect/tabbing wire linking cells from bus wire collecting current toward the junction box. That functional distinction helps interpret a listing without turning a familiar name into a specification.

First identify the connection in your approved cell or module layout. Is the part connecting cells, or collecting the output from the interconnect arrangement? Keep that answer separate from whether it arrives on a spool, on a carrier or as individual pieces.

A seller's “tabbing wire” heading may describe a flat ribbon or a shaped component. Neither wording gives you the contact geometry, material specification or process approval. Once the job is identified, compare the actual component with the contact arrangement it must serve.

Ribbon, bus wire and dog-bone connectors compared

Function, shape and supply format are separate selection dimensions. The following examples are not exclusive categories: a preformed part can serve a bus role, while an interconnect can be designed for a particular bonding process.

Component description Role or form First matching question
Straight tabbing ribbon A flat-wire form used in a cell interconnect design Does its specified geometry and process match the cell contacts?
Bus wire A module-current collection role; coil or preformed formats may be available Does it match the module bus connection being purchased?
Preformed dog-bone connector A shaped interconnect for the matching back-contact layout Do its contact areas match the exact cell-pad pattern?
Adhesive-specific interconnect A component designed for its stated conductive-bonding process Does the approved assembly process cover this particular part?

Ulbrich's standard ribbon example uses coated copper flat wire. That is one documented form, not the composition of every product called tabbing wire or of LinkSolar's listed strips.

Its bus-wire range includes continuous coils and preformed L/I pieces. A preformed shape therefore does not identify a dog-bone connector by itself. Read the role and the contact layout together before selecting the purchasing format.

Choose the connection role before matching form and process Two alternative role cards identify cell interconnect and module bus connection. Both require the actual contact layout, component form and approved assembly process. Match the connector to the actual cell pads

An IBC label or C60-style title does not establish universal compatibility. Back-contact generations can have different contact arrangements. The two listed dog-bone products require matching against the exact cells, including pad spacing, contact profile, orientation and the approved assembly process.

Use the cell's contact drawing and the connector's specification together. A photograph can reveal a formed shape, but it cannot measure pitch or establish which cell revision it fits. For a cut-cell purchase, identify the exact supplied version in that comparison rather than rely on a full-cell family name.

Process compatibility matters too. Ulbrich's adhesive-specific interconnect example is engineered for conductive adhesives. Similar appearance to a conventional ribbon does not make it a generic soldering substitute. Likewise, that manufacturer's process claims do not establish a coating, alloy or bonding specification for either LinkSolar pack.

If your process requires a specified alloy or coating, confirm it against the actual component data. The pack quantity and product photographs do not supply those material details.

Keep unresolved geometry or process details open before placing an order. If you already have an approved connector, compare a proposed replacement with that exact part and cell layout. Do not expand a match for one layout into approval for every IBC cell or generation.

Two stocked dog-bone supply formats

Choose between the listed packs after confirming the contact match. These two existing products are in stock. Packaging is a buying choice, not proof that one geometry replaces the other.

Carrier-format IBC strips: 50 pieces

The IBC dog-bone tabbing strips are supplied as repeated components on a carrier. The listed quantity is 50 pieces. A carrier or reel-like appearance does not mean that the product is sold as 50 metres of continuous wire.

Boxed C60-style strips: 50 or 100 pieces

The C60-style dog-bone connector pack supplies individual formed strips, with 50-piece and 100-piece options. Select the listed quantity after establishing the match. The C60-style description is not a claim of official brand authorization or compatibility with every back-contact cell.

Compare both descriptions with your cell layout. The images show supply form and contact shape; the product's package field states how many pieces you are buying.

Three buying situations

1. Your approved layout matches a listed pack

Choose the matching product above and buy the required listed quantity through its product page. An existing stock pack does not need a custom-order enquiry solely because the cells or module are part of a custom build.

2. You have cells, but the pad match is unresolved

Compare the exact cell reference and contact drawing before selecting the strip. If you are still choosing the cells, the solar-cell catalogue provides the cell-side purchase options. A cell technology name cannot settle the connector choice.

3. Your design requires a different interconnect form

Retain the specified straight ribbon, module bus part or adhesive-specific component as the reference. The two dog-bone listings do not establish stock of those other forms. A non-listed geometry belongs in a separate support or custom-specification discussion, with availability to be confirmed.

The cell-to-finished-panel guide provides broader process context. This article selects components; it does not replace the approved assembly instructions or prescribe soldering dimensions and temperatures.

Common choice questions

Can bus wire replace cell tabbing ribbon?

Shared material or appearance does not establish a replacement. Compare the connection role, specified geometry and process against the approved design.

Will any dog-bone connector fit every IBC cell?

No universal fit is declared. Match the exact pad arrangement, formed contact profile and assembly process; a family label cannot supply that evidence.

Does the carrier pack contain 50 metres?

No. The listed carrier-format pack is counted as 50 pieces. The boxed C60-style pack offers 50 or 100 pieces. Use the product option, not the photograph's arrangement, as the purchasing unit.

Choose the matching pack or clarify the geometry

For an established match, choose the listed stock pack from its product page. For a different geometry or an unresolved fit, contact us with the cell reference and contact drawing to ask what support is available. Non-listed specifications require confirmation before ordering.
