Last updated: September 2026. Figures checked against the live LinkSolar pages on September 25, 2026.

Before you buy a set of solar christmas fairy lights, run one number: the watt-hours the string uses in a night against the watt-hours its panel can put back on a December day. If the panel cannot refill what the string spends, the set dims early however many LEDs it has.

Solar christmas fairy lights are an LED string powered by a small solar panel that charges a battery by day, with a light sensor that switches the string on at dusk. Run time depends on panel watts, battery watt-hours (Wh, the energy the cell stores) and winter sun, so check those figures before LED count.

This guide explains the four parts inside a solar string and why winter is the hard case. It then sizes a panel and battery with one illustrative example, compares string classes in one table and lists what a spec sheet should state. The last sections cover what a wholesale or private-label buyer should send and answer common buyer questions.

For light brands and resellers, LinkSolar supplies custom mini solar panels for light makers through partner factories and sources finished solar string lights to spec on request.

How do solar christmas lights work, and what are the four parts?

Solar christmas lights work in a daily loop, where a small solar panel charges a battery through a controller by day and the controller's light sensor switches the LED string on at dusk and off when the battery runs low or the timer ends. Every set uses the same four parts, whatever its length or LED count.

  • Solar panel: The panel is the only energy source in the set, and it is rated in watts (W), the rate at which it turns sunlight into electrical power.
  • Battery: The battery stores the day's charge in one of three common cell classes, NiMH, Li-ion or LiFePO4, and its capacity is printed in milliamp-hours (mAh) or watt-hours (Wh), where Wh equals mAh times cell voltage divided by 1,000.
  • LED string: The LED count and the string length set how much power the string draws for each hour it is lit.
  • Controller: A small circuit board handles charge control, reads the light sensor and runs the lighting modes, such as steady, twinkle and timer.

The controller sits between the other three parts. By day it passes panel current into the battery, and after dusk it draws from the battery to light the string, cutting power before the cell is drained too far.

At dusk the controller draws from the battery and switches the LED string on. The panel charges the battery through the controller by day; at dusk the light sensor tells the controller to power the LED string from the battery.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, LED lighting is the most energy-efficient lighting technology, with efficacies up to 150 lumens per watt or more in some specialized instances. That efficiency is the reason a small panel can power a long decorative string at all.

Solar christmas lights are closed-loop sets, so the panel, battery and controller power only the string they ship with. For how these sets differ from modules that feed a wider system, see self-contained solar lights compared with real solar panels.

Why do solar christmas lights run shorter in winter?

Solar christmas lights run shorter in winter because the panel gets fewer peak sun hours from a lower sun and a cold battery accepts less charge, while the string is expected to stay lit through the longest nights of the year. All three limits arrive in the same weeks, so December is the month a solar string light has to be sized for.

A peak sun hour is one hour of sunlight at 1 kW/m², the reference intensity used to rate solar panels. According to PVEducation's page on average solar radiation, peak sun hours equal the average daily insolation in kWh/m² per day, which makes them the simplest way to compare one month of sun with another.

  • Short day: The panel has fewer daylight hours to charge the battery, and the string has more dark hours to fill.
  • Low sun: According to PVEducation's page on the sun's elevation angle, the height of the sun in the sky depends on latitude and day of the year, and a winter sun stays low, so the same small panel collects less energy each hour.
  • Snow and shade: A panel the size of a palm loses much of its output under a thin layer of snow or in the shadow of a gutter, shrub or fence that a higher summer sun cleared.
  • Cold battery: For most lithium chemistries the charge window stops at 0 °C, so a battery can survive a freezing night and still refuse to recharge the next morning.

The last point is the one most spec sheets skip. Operating temperature and charge temperature are two different numbers, and a buyer comparing strings for a cold climate should ask the supplier for both. The details are in this guide on why a cold battery stops accepting charge.

Think of the battery as a bucket the panel refills each day, and of a winter day as a short tap. A larger bucket carries the string through a dull day or two, and a larger panel fills the bucket faster while the tap runs. Panel watts and battery capacity together set how long a string runs in December, which is why the next section sizes both from the worst month rather than from a summer test.

How big should the panel and battery be for a solar string light?

A solar string light is sized from its nightly energy: string watts multiplied by hours on gives watt-hours (Wh) per night, the battery stores enough Wh for the nights you need, and the panel refills that battery in the peak sun hours of the worst month.

Watt-hours are the unit that ties the three parts together. A battery label in milliamp-hours (mAh) converts to Wh by multiplying by the cell voltage and dividing by 1,000, so the battery can be compared directly with the string's draw.

  1. Find the string draw: Read the string's power in watts (W) from the spec sheet, or ask the supplier for it when the sheet lists only LED count and length.
  2. Multiply by hours per night: String watts times the hours the string should stay on gives the Wh the string uses each night.
  3. Add losses: Add 20 to 30 % to that figure for regulator, wiring and temperature losses, the margin LinkSolar's custom mini panel page applies to small solar loads.
  4. Size the battery: Battery Wh equals nightly Wh times the nights of autonomy (typically 1 to 5 nights without sun), divided by the usable depth of discharge, for example 80 % for a LiFePO4 cell.
  5. Size the panel: Panel watts are roughly the nightly Wh with losses divided by the peak sun hours of the worst month the string must run, which for a holiday string is the December figure in the Northern Hemisphere.

Illustrative example, assumptions stated: the string is assumed to draw 1.2 W and stay on 6 h a night, the worst month is assumed to give 2 peak sun hours, and the battery is assumed to be a 3.2 V LiFePO4 cell covering 2 nights at 80 % usable depth of discharge. These figures are inputs for the arithmetic, not the rating of any product.

  • Nightly energy: 1.2 W × 6 h = 7.2 Wh per day.
  • With losses: 7.2 Wh plus 25 % for losses comes to 9 Wh.
  • Panel: 9 Wh ÷ 2 peak sun hours = 4.5 W of panel.
  • Battery: 7.2 Wh × 2 nights ÷ 0.8 = 18 Wh of storage.
  • Battery in mAh: 18 Wh × 1,000 ÷ 3.2 V = 5,625 mAh.

Change any assumption and the result moves with it. A spec sheet that states the string's watts, the panel's watts and the battery's Wh or mAh lets a buyer run this check before ordering.

Larger fixture loads follow the same method, and the guide to panel sizing for larger LED lighting loads works through it for bigger lights.

Specs to compare before you order: which string class fits the job?

A solar string light should be chosen by class, meaning where the string hangs and how long it must run each night, and then checked so its panel, battery and IP (ingress protection) rating fit that class before LED count is compared. LED count and string length set how much energy the string draws. The panel, the battery and the cable between them decide whether that draw can be covered on a winter day.

The table below compares four common string classes on the specs a buyer should check, with typical figures only.

Solar string light classes: what to compare (typical, September 25, 2026; compares string classes, not makers)
String class Typical use LED count and length (typical) Panel and cable to check Battery to check IP to ask for
Short indoor or window string Mantel, window, jar Short string, low LED count (typical) Panel must sit outdoors or in direct sun; long panel lead Small cell; ask for Wh Low exposure; still ask
10 m outdoor string Porch rail, shrub, small tree Around 10 m, around 100 LEDs (typical) Stake panel with a lead long enough to reach sun Ask for chemistry and Wh Outdoor rating for panel, string and connector
Long roofline string Eaves, fence line Longer runs or linked sets (typical) Larger separate panel; cable gauge and length Larger Wh; ask for charge temperature Outdoor rating on every joint
Net lights Hedges, walls Grid of LEDs sized by area (typical) Higher draw, so a larger panel Larger Wh Outdoor rating

For a light maker sourcing the power side, LinkSolar lists small panels with published electrical figures (Voc, Isc, Vmp, Imp, dimensions and lead type) so a string can be matched to a panel before ordering.

How to read the columns:

  • String class: The class groups strings by where they hang, which sets how exposed the parts are and how long the run has to be.
  • LED count and length: These two figures set the string's draw in watts, so a longer or denser string needs more energy each night.
  • Panel and cable: The panel has to reach direct sun, so the lead length from panel to string matters as much as the panel watts.
  • Battery: Ask for chemistry and capacity in watt-hours (Wh), because a mAh figure alone hides the cell voltage.
  • IP to ask for: The rating should cover the panel, the string and every connector that sits outside.

To place a specific string in a class with real numbers, run the illustrative sizing example from the previous section with that string's own draw and hours.

What should you check on a solar fairy light spec sheet?

A solar fairy light spec sheet should state panel watts, battery chemistry and capacity, LED count and string length, IP rating, panel-to-string cable length and lighting modes, and a sheet missing panel watts or battery capacity cannot be sized. Ask for those two numbers in writing first.

  • Panel watts: The sheet should give the panel rating in W, since "solar charging" alone says nothing about winter charging.
  • Battery type and capacity: The sheet should name the cell chemistry and give capacity in mAh (milliamp-hours), which becomes comparable once converted with Wh = mAh × V ÷ 1,000, so 1,800 mAh at 1.2 V is 2.16 Wh while 1,800 mAh at 3.2 V is 5.76 Wh.
  • LED count and length: These two figures set how much power the string draws.
  • IP rating: An IP (ingress protection) rating is a two-digit code in which the first digit describes protection against dust and the second describes protection against water.
  • Cable length: The lead between panel and string decides whether the panel can reach direct sun while the string hangs in shade.
  • Modes and timer: A steady mode uses more energy than a twinkle mode, and a timer that switches the string off after a set time stretches the battery further on short winter days.

The same 1,800 mAh label can hold more than twice the energy depending on cell voltage. Small sets typically use 1.2 V NiMH cells, while larger sets typically use 3.2 V LiFePO4 or 3.7 V Li-ion cells, and this guide explains how NiMH, Li-ion and LiFePO4 cells differ outdoors.

A low quiescent-current charge controller draws less from the battery while it waits for dusk, which preserves night run time; this guide covers what a small charge controller does between panel and cell.

Ask the supplier for the IP rating and the test report behind it on the finished string. The report shows which parts were tested, which matters because the panel lead, battery housing and string connector are separate joints.

For a panel left outdoors all season, check the front surface as well. ETFE suits long outdoor exposure and UV, while matte PET suits cost-sensitive or sheltered use.

What should a wholesale or private-label buyer send for a quote?

A wholesale or private-label buyer of solar christmas lights should send one written spec covering the string, the power parts and the order, because a supplier can only confirm run time and cost against numbers.

  1. LED count: State the LEDs per string, since count and length set the string's power draw.
  2. String length: Give the lit length in meters and the lead length before the first LED.
  3. Color: Name the LED color, such as warm white or multicolor, and the wire color.
  4. Modes: List the modes you need, such as steady, twinkle and a timer.
  5. Panel W: Give the panel watts, or the nightly Wh and the worst month so the supplier can size it.
  6. Battery: Name the chemistry (NiMH, Li-ion or LiFePO4) and the capacity in mAh at a stated voltage, or in Wh.
  7. Run-time target: State the hours per night and the month the string must hold them, for example December.
  8. Packaging: Say whether you need branded retail boxes, neutral packaging or bulk cartons.
  9. Quantity: Give the order quantity per variant.
  10. Destination: Name the destination country and port so the quote covers the right shipping route.

LinkSolar supplies small and custom mini panels to light makers and sources finished solar string lights to spec on request. For the power side, LinkSolar sources panels built to an outline, voltage and cable length, with panel voltages from 3 V to 48 V and a connector type chosen to match the string's controller.

The reply to a complete spec is a written specification to confirm before ordering, covering cell layout, target Vmp and Imp (the panel's voltage and current at maximum power), lamination and connector. OEM marking, custom labeling and neutral packaging are available, and the cell type is confirmed in writing before the order. Paid samples let a buyer test the string against the run-time target first.

FAQ: solar christmas and fairy lights

Do solar christmas lights work in winter?

Solar christmas lights work in winter when the panel is sized for the December sun and sits in direct sunlight. A panel sized for a summer day, or placed under eaves, behind a hedge or under snow, refills less of the battery, so the string switches off earlier in the evening. Sizing the panel and battery against the worst month's peak sun hours is what keeps a set lit through December.

Can I replace the battery in solar fairy lights?

Battery replacement depends on the instructions for your exact solar fairy light model. Match the replacement to the original chemistry and voltage, for example a 1.2 V NiMH cell for a 1.2 V NiMH cell. Never swap chemistry, since the controller charges one cell type and a different cell can be overcharged or undercharged. Matching chemistry and voltage is necessary, but does not by itself establish compatibility. Before ordering, provide the light model, clear photos of the original battery label and connections, and the manufacturer's battery and charging instructions. Check whether it is a single cell or a battery pack, the number of cells, dimensions, terminals, connector or wire-harness polarity, and the original controller's charging requirements. Confirm from the manufacturer's instructions whether battery removal and replacement are permitted and whether external charging is allowed. Without these model-specific details, a replacement battery or external charger cannot be confirmed as compatible.

Can the solar panel be separate from the string?

The solar panel can be separate from the string; many sets use a stake panel on a lead so the panel sits in the sun while the lights hang in shade or indoors. The cable length from panel to string is a spec to ask for, since it decides where the panel can go. Keep the run as short as the site allows and size the wire so voltage drop stays under 3-5 %.

How long do solar string lights run each night?

A solar string light runs each night for about as long as its usable battery watt-hours divided by the string's watts, provided the panel refilled the battery that day. The same set runs longer in a sunny month than in December, when short days leave the battery partly charged. For what powers the string once the panel stops producing, see what a solar light runs on after sunset.

Can solar lights charge through a window or glass?

Solar lights can charge through a window or glass, but slowly, because the glass, any coating on it and the angle of the sun all cut the light that reaches the cells. According to PVEducation, a silicon module's front surface needs high transmission from 350 nm to 1200 nm and low reflection, and a window pane is one more surface in the light's path. Face the panel toward the sun outdoors; solar output behind window glass in detail covers the indoor case.

Next step

A solar string light order starts with four details in writing: LED count, string length, run-time target with the month it must hold, and the destination. LinkSolar supplies small and custom mini panels to light makers and sources finished solar string lights to spec on request, replying with a written specification to confirm before ordering. Send those details through the contact form to request a quote, choosing the 'Bulk / wholesale quote' or 'Custom solar panel request' topic. You can also submit a separate inquiry for a battery, charger, battery box or other accessory without ordering a solar panel. Include the relevant model and specification documents; LinkSolar will assess sourcing options before confirming compatibility, availability or delivery.
