Quick answer: A solar panel for Meshtastic should match the receiving board's documented input and the energy used by the configured node. Specify the exact hardware revision, firmware, device role and daily watt-hours first. Then compare panel voltage, connector polarity and site harvest. A panel's wattage or nominal voltage alone cannot establish compatibility.

For an outdoor node on a pole or roof, the purchasing problem is a chain of interfaces: panel, charging assembly, battery and radio. Each supplier needs the same boundary information. Otherwise, two quotations can describe very different products even when both say “solar node.”

Start with the Meshtastic node you are buying for

Record the base board, installed core module and hardware revision together. A base-board name does not identify every radio, accessory or enclosure in the finished assembly. Include the firmware version, antenna arrangement, GPS, display and other peripherals that will remain fitted during normal service.

Also record the device role and relevant settings. Meshtastic's device configuration documentation distinguishes CLIENT, SENSOR and ROUTER behavior; those labels describe network duties, not fixed power ratings. State what the node actually does and which traffic it handles.

This guide concerns a board-based outdoor mesh node. A multi-channel LoRaWAN concentrator with backhaul has a different equipment boundary. If that is your project, use a separate guide for LoRaWAN gateway projects. Do not transfer a gateway's assumed consumption to a smaller mesh board.

Check the solar input before comparing panel watts

Identify where the panel's output will enter the assembly. Obtain the receiving device's current documentation before choosing a voltage label or connector. The three paths below are procurement alternatives; they are not interchangeable wiring instructions.

Panel input paths: identify the receiving interface first
Proposed path Evidence required before selecting the panel
Native board solar port Exact board revision, allowed solar input, charging arrangement, connector and contact polarity.
External charging controller Controller input limits, panel requirements and manufacturer-approved battery and node connections.
Regulated USB supply Approved regulator and receiving USB path, operating limits and behavior when solar input disappears.

For a specific example, the RAK19007 WisBlock Base Board 2nd Gen datasheet describes a 5 V panel at solar connector P1, specifies a JST ZHR-2 connector and warns that panel output must not exceed 5.5 V. Apply that information only to the documented board scope; confirm your actual assembly and contact polarity separately.

Nominal “5 V” is not proof of compliance. Ask for open-circuit voltage (Voc), maximum-power voltage (Vmp), and the panel maker's verified cold-condition Voc for the site's design conditions. Check those against the receiver's permitted input. A USB charging-current figure is not a solar-port current limit. Missing receiver documentation leaves the panel choice unresolved.

Conceptual panel input paths for a mesh node Three separate purchasing paths: board solar port, external charger, or regulated USB. Each requires its own receiving interface documentation. Confirm the whole receiving path; a matching plug alone is insufficient.

Measure listening and relay energy over time

Use accumulated energy over a representative interval, rather than a single current reading. The official Meshtastic power-consumption article, published September 21, 2026, explains why listening and transmission both matter and why configuration and relay traffic belong in the measurement record.

For procurement, ask for the measured watt-hours, elapsed hours, meter location and operating conditions. Note the firmware, role, enabled peripherals and traffic conditions alongside the result. A quiet observation and a busy relay period should not silently become the same design case. Sleep current alone cannot describe a node that spends much of its time listening.

Keep one energy boundary throughout the comparison. If the observation includes a regulator or controller's consumption, do not add that same loss again later. If it measures only the board, identify what remains outside it. Use manufacturer-approved measurement arrangements; a supplier's traceable record is more useful than an unexplained average.

Compare daily harvest and winter recovery needs

Here is one hypothetical calculation, not a measured Meshtastic result. Suppose average node power is 0.06 W: over 24 hours, demand is 1.44 Wh/day. With two equivalent sun hours and an assumed 0.65 factor from rated panel output to usable energy at that same node boundary, the energy-balance floor is 1.44 ÷ (2 × 0.65), or about 1.11 W.

That floor is not a panel recommendation or a winter reliability claim. All inputs are illustrative. The factor must cover the losses outside the selected measurement boundary once, without double-counting. Replace the assumptions with site and assembly evidence before selecting a product.

Daily balance also leaves unanswered how long the node must operate without useful harvest and how quickly depleted reserve must recover. Ask the system designer to document those requirements, winter shading, orientation and available mounting area. Compare listed formats only after the electrical boundary is settled.

Confirm the battery and charging assembly

Keep the battery choice tied to the board or charger manufacturer's approved chemistry, voltage, protection and charging-temperature conditions. A panel supplier cannot establish those from a photo of the node. Request the actual charging assembly's documentation and identify who owns the completed design.

If an external buffer or regulated supply is proposed, specify both its input and output paths and whether simultaneous charging and node operation are supported. Also request its documented behavior after normal loss and return of solar energy. Those are assembly questions, not properties established by a panel label.

A charging indicator does not demonstrate a positive daily energy balance. Compare the observation with the energy record and the manufacturer's operating conditions. Acceptance should use an agreed, safe record of normal operation and recovery, without bypassing protection or inventing a test threshold. A change of battery, controller or firmware can require the evidence to be checked again.

If the node stops accepting solar input or fails to restart after normal depletion, record the exact board/revision, firmware, charger and battery identifiers, port used, permitted temperature, last normal operation, indicator/error state and the shade/recovery timeline. Keep supplier-approved measurements and photographs with the record. Stop using an assembly with damage, overheating or an unresolved input/protection fault and ask the board/charger supplier to confirm the permitted recovery procedure. Do not bridge protection, defeat a cutoff or repeatedly reconnect an undocumented source to force recovery.

Request a comparable panel quote and sample record

Use the same worksheet for every supplier. Keep “buyer requirement,” “supplier-confirmed value” and “unknown” separate so an attractive quotation does not hide an unresolved interface.

Meshtastic panel RFQ: inputs and evidence to compare
Buyer input Supplier or assembly evidence
Board and operating case Base/core/revision, firmware, role and measured Wh record with traffic and peripherals.
Receiving input Receiver documentation plus panel Voc, Vmp, current, cold-condition voltage check and contact drawing.
Site and mechanical limits Panel outline, cable exit, mounting and enclosure interface, shading and environmental requirements.
Quantity and delivery boundary Quoted part list, battery/controller exclusions, availability confirmation and substitution approval.
Sample acceptance Identified assembly version, agreed operating conditions, energy record and normal recovery evidence.

Check the mini-panel electrical and enclosure inputs before completing the worksheet. For format options, compare listed mini-panel formats; a listing is not confirmation of Meshtastic compatibility.

Representative small-panel form factor. Confirm the panel's electrical limits and connection method against the selected node hardware.

Ask the quote to identify the panel part number and drawing revision, cable length and strain-relief arrangement, plus the permitted substitutions. Keep the sample configuration attached to its results. If a later order changes the connector, encapsulation, charging assembly or installed accessories, check which evidence still applies instead of treating the first sample as approval of every variant.

LinkSolar's listed products include panel and cut/custom-cell options. Unlisted requirements need a custom inquiry. Confirm available parts, the exact supplied item and any missing assembly responsibility before ordering; no particular board-compatible SKU or complete node kit is established here.

FAQ: a solar panel for a Meshtastic node

Can a nominal 5 V panel connect directly?

Only when the exact receiving assembly permits its output range and the connector polarity is confirmed. A nominal label does not establish maximum voltage.

Can sleep current determine the panel size?

No. Use representative accumulated energy for the configured node, including its actual listening and relay workload.

Does a charging light prove the panel is sufficient?

No. It does not establish daily harvested energy, usable reserve or recovery performance.

Does buying the panel include the whole solar node?

Only if the quotation explicitly includes the other parts and responsibilities. Confirm the supplied boundary item by item.

Request a quote with the interface already defined. Send the exact board and revision, firmware and role, measured energy record, receiving-input documentation, site conditions, outline and quantity. You can send the confirmed panel interface for review. LinkSolar can confirm the available part supply scope against that request. Compatibility, pricing, MOQ, lead time, certification and complete-kit availability remain unconfirmed until specifically checked; the worksheet is not a commercial promise.

Meshtastic and the manufacturer names identify documented project examples; they do not imply affiliation or approval of a LinkSolar product.
